MEDIA GUIDE HOME

The North Carolina green industry is growing fast, thanks in part to interest in home gardening and landscaping.Gardening is considered our nation's most popular pastime, yielding fresh fruits and vegetables for the dinner table, a cleaner environment and aesthetically pleasing landscapes.

For today's home gardener and the industries that serve them, N.C. State University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences provides innovative teaching, research and extension programs. The JC Raulston Arboretum, one of the nation's best research and teaching gardens, is a resource for students, gardening enthusiasts and professionals from North Carolina's $1 billion-a-year green industry. And a new research and education center aims to find environmentally sound ways of managing the state's 2.2 million acres of turfgrass.

Meanwhile, Cooperative Extension helps gardeners in all 100 counties learn more about new plants, native plants and environmental stewardship. Extension-trained Master Gardener volunteers are instrumental in these efforts, sharing their knowledge of proper plant selection, cultural practices and pest management with fellow gardeners, school students and others.
