Health and human development are the focus of some College extension and research programs.North Carolina's families face many challenges: Our population of people over 65 is expected to double by 2025, and the average baby boomer couple has more living parents than children. Among the general population, chronic diseases with links to nutrition and physical activity are among the leading causes of death. Childhood obesity and diabetes are on the rise. And with a growing number of families with two working parents, the need for high-quality child care is urgent.

Through the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service and the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, N.C. State University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences has a network of university specialists, county agents and volunteers working to address these and other key issues related to health and human development.

Cooperative Extension educators serve families, industries, schools, communities and non-profit agencies, bringing them educational programs on cancer prevention and early detection; aging and adult development; child care and child development; family development; foods and nutrition; infant, child and maternal nutrition; and more.
