College research and extension programs are focused on environmentally and economically sound management. They eat away at gardens, forests and farms, infest homes and businesses and cause diseases such as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, West Nile virus and La Crosse encephalitis. But insects and other pests aren't all bad: They prey on other pests, pollinate crops and make honey and silk.

N.C. State University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences conducts teaching, research and extension programs aimed at helping people learn more about insects and other pests and to control damage and prevent disease in ways that are economical and environmentally sound.

Our scientists are developing safer insecticides, investigating insect-borne diseases, exploring fundamental principles that govern pest behavior and studying the influence of genetically modified organisms on insect populations. And our extension specialists and agents work to help homeowners and farmers identify pests and the best ways to manage them. Important tools in these efforts are an insect collection with more than 1 million samples and a plant disease and insect clinic that examines thousands of samples annually.
