News media resources for
Cooperative Extension agents
When it comes to providing
the public with Cooperative Extension's disaster preparedness and recovery
information, the news media can be a powerful partner.
Linked here, you will
find news releases designed to help you provide timely, credible, ready-to-use
information to the media when it is needed. The releases are available
as html and PDF documents and in RTF files that can be opened and edited
in StarWriter, Word and other word-processing programs.
A
separate media source directory lists N.C. State University College
of Agriculture and Life Sciences specialists who can provide even more
information for you and the news media.
How
to use the news releases and the source directory
Here are a few suggestions:
Before a disaster
arises
Schedule a personal visit with TV, radio and newspaper personnel to let
them know of the disaster relief information that you can provide to them
on short notice. You may want to share a list of information that you
can provide or a sample and tell them about Cooperative Extension's disaster
Web site and about the national Extension Disaster Education Network Web
site at http://www.eden.lsu.edu/.
When a disaster
season is approaching or a disaster seems imminent
You may want to call or e-mail your local media outlets to remind them
that you have information and that you would be willing to be interviewed
on topics that fall within your area of expertise. Because you may lose
electricity, go ahead and make copies of the releases you think might
be needed. Be sure to include your name, title, telephone number and other
pertinent contact information on every release.
Develop a plan, plus
an alternate way, to deliver the information to your media outlets. Depending
on how much time leeway that you have, you may want to deliver the information
just before the natural disaster strikes.
Remember that not
everyone may have access to TV or newspapers, and radio may be the best
way to communicate with the public.
After a disaster
strikes
Should
a disaster strike, the Department of Communication Services in N.C. State
University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences will work with Cooperative
Extension specialists to provide information directly to the media.
This information will also be sent to county Extension directors via e-mail.
If you have questions
about using this material or need help working with the media in a time
of disaster, please call the Writing Team Coordinator at 919.513.3127
or the Department of Communication Services at 919.513.3045.
