N.C. State to host environmental conflict symposium Feb. 10

A Feb. 10 symposium on the North Carolina State University campus will explore collaborative decision making as a means to resolve conflict over environmental issues.

The Research Triangle Universities Symposium on Environmental Conflict Resolution will be held at the Jane S. McKimmon Center on the N.C. State campus. The symposium is hosted by the Natural Resources Leadership Institute at N.C. State.

Highlighted speakers include Lynn Scarlett, deputy secretary designee of the U.S. Department of the Interior; Hanna Cortner, author of The Politics of Ecosystem Management ; Gail Bingham, president of RESOLVE, a nonprofit public policy dispute resolution organization with offices in Washington, D.C., and Portland, OR; and James Souby, president and chief executive officer of the Oquirrh Institute, a Salt Lake City, Utah, organization that investigates emerging public policy dilemmas and offers creative solutions.

Collaborative decision making on natural resources and environmental issues grew out of the alternative dispute resolution movement in the 1970s. Using nonadversarial techniques of principled negotiation, collaboration is based on inclusiveness; all parties affected by a decision are in some way represented in deliberations. Collaborative approaches are becoming more common in North Carolina and nationwide as a way to bring local voices to issues related to environmental policy and land management. The symposium will provide a forum for participants to learn more about collaborative decision making.

The symposium is sponsored by N.C. State University, Duke University Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences, and the Environmental Finance Center at the University of North Carolina School of Government.

There is a $40 registration fee for the symposium. Registration and other symposium information is available on line at the Natural Resources Leadership Institute Web site at http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/nrli . Information is also available from Steve Smutko, Natural Resources Leadership Institute director, at 919.515.4683 or steve_smutko@ncsu.edu.

The Natural Resources Leadership Institute is an effort of North Carolina Cooperative Extension that works to improve natural resources management and to enhance rural economic development while improving environmental quality.
