Tenure Awards
Congratulations 2006 Tenure Award Recipients! You will be honored
this year at the 2007 State Extension Conference Luncheon for completing
10, 20 or 30 years of service with NCCE.
Your attendance is requested at the Awards Reception on March 12, 2007. The reception will be held in Room 8 at the McKimmon Center from 6:00 until 7:00 pm.
Tenure award recipients for ten and twenty years of service may invite a guest. Seating for these guests is limited to the general audience.
30-year tenure award recipients may invite a special guest. 30-year tenure award recipients and their guest will have reserved seating at the front of the banquet hall.
The awards luncheon processional will begin at 7:00 pm. A member of the awards planning committee will direct you to your assigned seating.

Carolyn Stanley Barnes and George Edward Barnes 4-H Graduate Education
Scholarship
The Carolyn Stanley Barnes and George Edward Barnes 4-H Graduate Education
Scholarship has been established by retired Vance County Extension
4-H Agent Carolyn Stanley Barnes and her husband, George Edward Barnes,
to provide a graduate education scholarship to a 4-H professional.
This scholarship has been designed to provide support to graduate students
who are currently working as 4-H Extension professionals (Extension
Agents, Program Assistants or Program Associates).
The 2006 award value is $600.

Chet and Lucy Black 4-H Professional Development Scholarship
The Chet & Lucy Black 4-H Professional Development Scholarship
has been established by Director Emeritus Dr. Chester Black and his
wife Lucy to further the profession of a 4-H youth program assistant
or associate, 4-H agent, or 4-H specialist.
A monetary scholarship of $1,000 will be given to the recipient to
attend a professional development experience that will enhance the
recipient's ability to perform their job responsibilities (see description
for more details). All employees of the North Carolina Cooperative
Extension Service whose major job responsibility is 4-H youth development
work are encouraged to apply.
Winner: Patricia Cahoon - Carteret County – SE Dist
Edgar J. and Ethel B. Boone Adult Education Award
The many friends and colleagues of Dr. Edgar J. and Ethel B. Boone
joined them in establishing the Edgar J. and Ethel B. Boone Adult
Education Award as a tribute to Dr. Boone and his wife. Dr. Boone
is the founding Head of the Department of Adult and Community College
Education at NC State University and a retired Assistant Director
of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service. This award is
dedicated to outstanding field faculty in the North Carolina Cooperative
Extension Service for the purpose of helping them continue their
professional development.
The 2006 award value is three awards at $1,000 each.

Charles M. Brickhouse Development Award(s)
Charles M. Brickhouse established an endowment fund in the North Carolina State
University University Alumni Association to finance professional improvement
activities for employees of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service.
Mr. Brickhouse was Dare County's first county agent in 1918 and then served
as a Lenoir County agent until 1938. Mr. Brickhouse served as a district agent
supervising Extension work in 25 southeastern North Carolina counties until
his retirement in 1956. Mr. Brickhouse passed away in 1992. The award(s) will
be made annually.
The 2006 award value is one award at $2,500 and one award at $1,000. This amount
will be distributed based on the recommendation of the awards committee and
concurrence of the Director.

Delphine Sellar - Durham County – NC Dist
Billy and Wilma Caldwell Extension Leadership Award for County Extension Directors
Dr. Billy Caldwell served as the Head of the Crop Science Department
from 1975 through 1989, as Assistant Director, ANR/CRD from 1989 through
1997, and then served as Associate Director of the North Carolina Cooperative
Extension Service from 1997 until he retired on December 31, 1999.
Dr. and Mrs. Caldwell established the Billy and Wilma Caldwell Extension
Leadership Award for County Extension Directors as a professional development
award to increase professional competencies in leadership for County
Extension Directors.
The 2006 award value is $500.

Victoria Jean Cope North Carolina
4-H Professional Development Award(s)
This award was established in 1991 by Mr. and Mrs. William Cope as
a memorial to their daughter, Victoria Jean Cope. Miss Cope was an
outstanding 4-H agent with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension
Service, who met an untimely death as the result of an automobile accident.
The 2006 award value is $500.
Winner: Tara Taylor – Lenior County – SE Dist
Ada B. Dalla-Pozza Professional Development Award
This award was established by Ada Dalla-Pozza, retired State Home Economics
Leader, in 1992. The purpose of this award is to enhance the professional
development of an outstanding Extension Family and Consumer Sciences
career professional in North Carolina, who exhibits the ability to
recognize concerns and needs of families and to involve people in planning
and implementing educational programs that benefit clientele. The award
is to be used for a professional improvement opportunity that will
enhance the development of the applicant.
The 2006 award is $1,000.

The George and Virginia Hyatt Extension Scholarship Award
The George and Virginia Hyatt Extension Scholarship Award was founded
by the contributions of friends and staff of the North Carolina Cooperative
Extension Service as a tribute to Director Hyatt and his wife. The
scholarship is dedicated to professional development of the career
Extension worker. It is awarded annually.
The 2006 award value is two awards at $1,000 each.

R. E. Jones Program Award
The R. E. Jones award is named after the late Robert Earle Jones, former
Assistant Director of the Agriculture Extension Service and Associate
Dean of the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences at A&T
State University. The award recognizes outstanding achievements of
an individual or team which have exhibited significant programming,
leadership and outreach to non-traditional audiences.

Dist
Carol M. Birckhead Award for Outstanding County Extension Director
During her Extension career, Carol M. Birckhead, former County Extension
Director in Hoke County, had been recognized by staff, peers, volunteers,
and local government for outstanding leadership and citizenship. To
honor her memory, Carol's family established the "Carol M. Birckhead
Award for Outstanding County Extension Director" plaque. Counties
and others in the organization are encouraged to nominate a County
Extension Director they believe is deserving of this award.

Lois G. Britt
Outstanding Extension Agent Award
Lois Britt worked for the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service,
Duplin County Center for 33 years. At her retirement in 1990, she had
served for 12 years as the center's County Extension Director. She
worked for 10 years with Murphy Family Farms as Vice President for
Public Relations. She served as Special Assistant to the President
of Murphy-Brown LLC until her death in 2005.
Ms. Britt established the Lois G. Britt Outstanding Extension Agent
Award to provide an annual award to an outstanding field faculty member
of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service.

Lathan F. Smith, Jr.
Award of Excellence in 4-H
This award was established by the family of Lathan Smith to honor an
Extension 4-H Agent whose performance exemplifies the outstanding professional
characteristics demonstrated by Mr. Smith during his professional career.
Mr. Smith served as an Extension Agent in Wayne and Davidson Counties.
He was named Extension District 4-H Program Leader on April 15, 1978
and was appointed Extension Professor of 4-H Youth Development on July
1, 1979. He was named Extension Specialist, 4-H in July 1984.
The 2006 award amount is $750.

Dr. R. Marshall Stewart and Mrs. Jan Stewart 4-H Leadership
Award
The Dr. R. Marshall and Mrs. Jan Stewart 4-H Leadership Award has been
established by Associate Director, Department Head, and State 4-H Leader,
Dr. Marshall Stewart and his wife Jan to recognize an outstanding 4-H
professional (Extension Agent, Program Assistant, Program Associate,
or County Extension Director) who has provided exemplary leadership
in a targeted program or initiative.

Award
At Extension Conference, the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service
recognizes a limited number of EPA employees for outstanding leadership
within the organization. Awardees are selected from nominations made
by their fellow employees.

Research Friend of Extension Award
Over the years, our research faculty co-workers have made outstanding
contributions to the people of North Carolina. Many of them have
worked cooperatively with you and other Extension faculty and field
staff to put proven technology to use. In one form or another, they
have gone "above and beyond" their research assignment
to assist directly in developing and implementing important Extension
programs.

North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service Foundation Search for
Excellence Awards
Sponsored by The Grange
The purpose of the Search for Excellence Awards is to promote and identify
professional excellence within all facets of the North Carolina Cooperative
Extension Service.
Awards will be made in each of eight categories. Individual or team
nominations will be accepted with only one award given per category.
Team nominations should consist of two (2) or more persons. Individual
winners will receive $1,000. Winning teams will be awarded $1,500,
to be divided as the team deems appropriate. Categories include:
