Week of January 21: The Agricultural Education program, School and Community
The Essential Question
It is anticipated that we will answer the following question during the course of this lesson:

What are some va;uable resources to use in developing a program or community description.

Objectives
In this learning session, you will:
Develop a school and community program description

Introduction

Where's the lesson!? Actually, you've already had this one. In my haste to load your assignment related to program management, I jumped ahead on the content. Last week's lesson should have been this week's lesson and vice versa. Oh well...

Since most of you have already submitted your assignment, I thought I would now make available to you some valuable resources that would have made that first assignment submission easier. (i.e. cart before the horse) Isn't that par for the course? Browse the links below at your convenience. I'll start working on next week's assignment and lesson plan.

As for now, you have only two assignments posted. They are the program description and the program management structure. Reworking the class website has been a real pain in the asparin bottle. However, it has been fun revisiting all that wonderful program management stuff that I learned a long time ago. Keep your eye on the course web site, and DO NOT get behind on your assignments.

Resources

The following resources are useful in preparing descriptions about the school, community and agricultural industry

The North Carolina Rural Economic Development Center's rural data bank is a one-stop shopping source for information about your county. It is one of your best resources.

The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Sciences has a county overview of agricultural operations. You can also find county production estimates on the main web site.

The North Carolina State Government Webpage has state demographics that might be of use to you. It also includes links to the most recent U.S. Census.

The Employment Security Commission of North Carolina has useful labor market statistics.

How well is your school doing. Check out your school report card at NC School Report Cards. Who cares how the schools are doing? Well, if you ask a realtor, they will tell you that people who are buying homes often ask about the quality of schools in the community.

The North Carolina Department of Commerce has some useful data, and it's available in Excel spreadsheets.
