Advisory Committees


Introduction

An advisory committee is a group of business, industry, community and school-related people who help you keep your program on track. With appropriate management, it can provide both guidance and support. In this lesson, you will learn to use your committee and its members to help you develop, design and deliver a quality program .

Take the Advisory Committee Pre-Test to see how much you know. 

I. Discuss nature and purposes of advisory committees

  • Read Section 18 "Working with the Advisory Committee" from the Ag Teacher’s Manual published by the National FFA Organization.
II. Outline the process of organizing an advisory committee.
  • Read section 2-13 to 2-14 on advisory committees out of Getting Connected: The National FFA Organization’s Partners Handbook.
  • Review the handout on the example of an advisory committee’s plan of action. This provides many samples of topics that your advisory committee can focus on.
  • Samples of initial correspondence with advisory committee members.
  • Sample of meeting agenda
III. Explain the roles and limitations of advisory committees.
  • Read the section on advisory committees from the paper titled Professional Development of Beginning Vocational Teachers: Implementation System.
  • Review the handout on functions of an advisory committee.
IV. Outline what goes into a charter and bylaws of an advisory committee.
  • Review the template for establishing a constitution for local FFA chapters. This will give you some guidelines for writing a constitution for your advisory committee.
  • Review the National FFA organization’s bylaws.
  • Review the bylaws for New York State local advisory councils.

Note about the assignment: If you are currently student teaching and your cooperating teacher has an advisory committee in place, please look over it before it is submitted and suggest any changes or revisions that may need to be made. If your cooperating teacher does not have an advisory committe, please find real people associated with your community and program to place on "your advisory committee". If you are NOT currently student teaching, please choose a community that you are familiar with. Choose real people from the community to place on a committee for a made-up school.
