Names of Lecturers and Their Topics
For the Institute Season of 1899-1900. (Ohio)

(Note: The following list of lecturers available to make presentations at Farmers Institutes was published in the 54th Annual Report of the Ohio State Board of Agriculture published in 1899. Please note there were two main sources of lecturers - those from the Ohio State University and those employed by the Ohio State Board of Agriculture. It appears the ones employed by the Board of Agriculture were experienced farmers from through out the state.

In Ohio a three mills per capita tax supported Farmers' Institute work. The Farmers' Institute season in 1899-1900 started on Monday, November 27, 1899 and ran through March 3, 1900. There were 6-8 circuits in operation. Two hundred and fifty three (253) county institutes were held during this period under the auspices of the state Board of Agriculture. Twenty independent institutes were also conducted. The average attendance per institute was 361. Each institute was two days in length.

The 54th report also contained a detailed financial report. I have included in parenthesis the amount of reimbursement the lecturer received for travel and expenses in the previous year. This gives us a rough measure of the popularity of that lecturer. However, it should be noted that the state Board of Agriculture assigned lecturers based upon requests from counties.)
