Preface

How we teach adults has evolved over the years. At one time, nearly all adult education was either face-to-face or through correspondence courses. Then came radio broadcasts and educational television. With the advent of the Internet, we are seeing more adult education moving online. While much of this has been at the university and community colege-level, it will not be long before more and more local Extension offices and high school-based adult educators are offering educational programs over the Internet.

The readings this week are designed to get you started thinking about this technology.  There is definitely movement in this direction (at all educational levels); therefore, it is an area that will continue to evolve and we, as educators, will continue to learn.

Instructional Activities:

small red globe Read Chapter 14 "Distance Learning with Adults" in Efffective Adult Learning by Birkenholz.  This chapter gives a good overview of the history and development of distance education.  This reading can be found in the Class 13 folder in WebCT Vista.
small red globe White and Birdwell discuss distance education and distance learning techniques in this chapter from Adult Learning Methods (1998, 2nd. ed.) edited by Michael Galbraith.  This article is a little dated considering the advances made in distance education and technology; however, the concepts discussed are still valid today.  This reading can be found in the Class 13 folder in WebCT Vista.
small red globe Cercone examines the characteristics of adult learners and their implications for online learning design in this 2008 AACE Journal article.
small red globe Dromgoole and Boleman analyze Extension Agent's perceived barriers and opportunities related to distance education and Extension program delivery in this 2006 Journal of Extension article.
small red globe We have previously discussed the importance of social interaction with adult learners.  In this Journal of Extension article from 2004, Burkhart-Kriesel and Caine, discuss how Extension has evolved in its methods to facilitate social interaction from the early potluck suppers to the online seminars of today.
