Objectives:
At the end of this lesson you should be able to:

  • Examine additional principles and concepts in adult education teaching methods.
  • Assess and examine your practiced teaching style (utilizing the PALS inventory) and compare it with your philosophy.
  • Explore various adult education program (teaching) formats.
  • Acquire knowledge in creating professional presentations for adult education situations.

In this lesson, we continue to explore adult teaching methods.

Instructional Activities:
small red globe Read Chapter 6  "An Andragogical Process Model for Learning" and Chapter 7 "Andragogy in Practice"  in The Adult Learner by Knowles et al.
small red globe Complete the Principles of Adult Learning Scale (PALS) (Word file) by Gary Conti, prior to studying the following articles/links.  How do these results relate to your philosophy of adult education (PAEI)? 
small red globe Examine the concept of teaching style by reading "Identifying Your Teaching Style" by Gary Conti found in Adult Learning Methods, 2nd ed. (1998) edited by Michael Galbraith.  (A complete description of the PALS inventory is included in this reading which will help you interpret and understand your scores.)   This reading can be found in the Class 7 folder in WebCT Vista.
small red globe To understand the relationship between teaching style and adult student learning, read the article by Conti found in Adult Education Quarterly [1985, Summer; 35(4), pp. 220-228].
small red globe Revisit a previous reading on the teaching style of Extension Agents by Seevers in the Journal of Extension [1995, 33(3)].  Compare your PALS results to her findings.
small red globe Read Heimlich and Norland's "Matching Methods to Teaching Style" in Developing Teaching Style in Adult Education (1994, pp. 157-176).
small red globe Read about Wise & Ezell's efforts to develop an effective training model for adult learners in the Journal of Extension [2003, 41(2)].
small red globe Read Caffarella's contribution on adult education teaching/program formats in Planning Programs for Adult Learners, 2nd ed. (2002, pp. 286-293).  This reading can be found in the Class 7 folder in WebCT Vista.
small red globe Tired of the "just lecture" approach for adult education? Read Ponessa's article on Gaining Audience Involvement: Interactive Teaching Exercises from the Journal of Extension [1999, 37(3)]. 
Assignments: Discussion:
  • Email your completed PALS inventory (the completed Word file) to Dr. Kistler.  Include a copy in your course notes (it will be helpful for your reflection journal, discussion board, and final exam).
  • Personal Reflection Journal #2 is due at the end of this class (Sunday, March 1).  This journal will cover all of the readings, activities, and discussion from classes 5 through 7.  Review the description of this assignment in the course syllabus.  Upload your completed journal in WebCT Vista (under Assignments).
  • Reminder - NO CLASS next week due to Spring Break (March 2-8).  Enjoy the break!
After you finish this lesson go to the course discussion board and respond to the question posted (and at least one peer's response).
