Computing Basics

Introduction:

Several years ago, we were about two-thirds of the way through the semester when one of the students held up a hand and asked, "What is the C drive." This question floored me. I had just assumed that all the students in the class knew basic computer terminology and knew their way around the computer. I was mistaken. I vowed that will not happen ago. So that is why we have this lesson. For some of you, this information will be mundane because you may already know this. For others it may be new. However, I want all of us on the same page as we move forward. Students in this class come from a variety of backgrounds and have different levels of expertise in regards to computers. That is why this lesson is needed.

bullet  While the article Desktop PCs: The Essential Consumer Buying Guide gets a little techie (well really very techie), it contains a good bit of quality information This comes from PC Magazine.

bullet Which computer company puts all these parts together the best? In other words, all computers have these components but which computer manufacturer is the best? Every year PC Magazine surveys it readers to answer this question. Who gets the best ratings and who flunks for desktop computers?  How about for notebook computer ratings?

bullet Need help on basic computer technology? You might want to bookmark this High-Tech Dictionary. Look up CPU and USB just to see how the dictionary works. In this class when you come across a term that has not been defined before, or if you need a refresher, this site could be very helpful.

Lagniappe:

Lagniappe is a term commonly used in Louisiana and means an unusual or unexpected gift or treat. From time to time there will be a little lagniappe in these classes. Since many of us are country folks, it might be helpful to learn about Technology for Country Folks.
