AEE 526 - Information Technologies in Agricultural and Extension Education |
Module 11: |
Wikis and Blogs (1 unit) |
Introduction:![]() |
Once upon a time most girls (at least I
think) had diaries. Here they would wrote down their private thoughts.
Well, times have changed and many people are now writing down their
thoughts but they are available for the entire world to see as Internet
Blogs. We can use this new communication method in extension and
education. In this module you will learn about blogs and a cousin of
the blog--the wiki. Be thinking of how you can use these in your
teaching and extension work.

The NCSU library provides a hosting site
for Blogs. Of course it is called WolfBlogs. Read the overview
introduction to WolfBlogs. Watch
the video Blogs
in Plain English on Youtube. Read
some of the blog entries from my friend Mary at http://blogs.lib.ncsu.edu/page/schweitzer
to get a feel for how a blog can be used in teaching. She is excited
about this summer because she finally decided to get a cot and an air
mattress. She plans to take a first aid course as soon as the semester
is over. When you read her blog, you will know why. Read
about blogs from the online Encyclopedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blog The
NCSU library provides a hosting site for Wikis. Of course it is called
WolfWikis. Read the introduction at http://wikis.lib.ncsu.edu/index.php/Main_Page. Now
watch the video Wikis
in Plain English. How
are Wikis used in teaching. To get an idea go to http://wikis.lib.ncsu.edu/index.php/Courses
and click on Education. Then click on EAC 595G and EAC 538 to get
a feel for two approaches to using Wikis. Read
about Wikis from Wikipedia (Note: Wikipedia is a Wiki) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki Exactly
what
is the difference between a Wiki and a Blog? Just want to
make sure you know the difference. Go
the Alleghany County CES site
and find the 4-H Blog. If you work with the
Cooperative Extension Service go to http://collaborate.extension.org/wiki/Main_Page
and do a little exploring. Be and sure to visit the http://collaborate.extension.org/wiki/Working_in_MediaWiki_-_an_Article_Start_to_Finish
link. |
