Most professionals in agricultural and extension education present information to others. PowerPoint is a presentation tool that is commonly used. However, most people just use the basic, standard PowerPoint features In this module we will learn some of the more advanced features of using  PowerPoint. The following provides a brief overview of the five concepts that are included in this module:
  1. Templates - Do you ever get tired of seeing the same old slide design used over and over. In this module you will learn how to create your own slide templates and download templates that others have created.
  2. Adding Narration to Slides - It is possible to add narration to slide shows. Thus others can hear what you have to say about each slide without you physically being present..
  3. Self Running/Looping slide show - You might want to have your narrated slide show in a booth at open house or the county fair. You can set it up so that it will run constantly.
  4. Non-linear PowerPoint - You can engage your audience through the use of multiple choice slide questions that will go to different slides depending  upon how the audience responds. And you can even play Jeopardy with a PowerPoint presentation. These novel, interactive ways to present information keeps the audience engaged.
  5. Displaying PowerPoint presentations on web sites - It is relatively easy to transfer a PowerPoint presentation to a web site. But what an you do to enable users of the web site to see PowerPoint presentations if they don't have PowerPoint. That will be covered in this module.
Note: Some people are using PowerPoint 2003 or earlier and some are using PowerPoint 2007. There is a world of difference in the two. So it is a real challenge to design an appopriate unit of instruction for the class. This lesson is based on PowerPoint 2003. If you have 2007, you can do everything in this lesson, you just may have to look a little harder to find where you need to be. In a few years, this lesson will be converted totally to 2007 PowerPoint.

Instructional
Activities:

bullet Read Garr Reynold's Top Ten Slide Tips (these are good)

bullet Microsoft has a series of lessons on how to get started using PowerPoint (if you need to review the basics, this is for you).

bullet View the PowerPoint presentation used in class. http://www.ncsu.edu/cals/agexed/aee526/ppt1.ppt.
(The first and last parts of this presentation contains important design information. The middle part is for those who may need a refresher on the basics of creating a PowerPoint presentation. Since the majority of this class uses PowePoint 2003, that is what is illustrated. The same commands are used in PowerPoint 2007 but you may have to search through the various tabls to find the corresponding information.)

bullet Read the handout used in my undergraduate class on how to create and save a PowerPoint template.  http://www.ncsu.edu/cals/agexed/aee226/templates.doc

bullet Microsoft has a lesson on how to create PowerPoint templates.

bullet View PowerPoint templates that can be downloaded from the Microsoft web site.

bullet Here are some other sites where PowerPoint templates can be downloaded:
bullet View the presentation used in class on non-linear PowerPoint presentations.  http://www.ncsu.edu/cals/agexed/aee226/pptbranching.ppt

bullet View examples of non-linear PowerPoint presentations.

bullet Listen to and watch this presentation on non-linear PowerPoint presentations.

bullet To learn one way to create a non-linear Powerpoint, follow this tutorial. There are other appoaches.

bullet This site has several interactive PowerPoint game templates. You will have to unzip them.

bullet You can search for jeopardy template on Google and find numerous pre-designed templates. You just type in the questions and answers.

bullet Read "How to add Narration to PowerPoint Presentations" from Tech Republic. If any of the points are not clear you could also look at "PowerPoint: Adding a Narration" from The State University of New York at Plattsburg.

bullet Setting up a "looping" slide show only takes a minute or two. Go to http://www.180techtips.com/160.htm to learn how.

bullet Graphicpush has a pretty good tutorial on how to convert a PowerPoint presentation to a html presentation so you can mount you PowerPoint on the web but they stop short. The don't tell how to publish it to the web which is tricky. They do an excellent job of all the details (and you really must pay attention to the details). After you do what they tell you to do you need to realize that TWO files have been created and both must be moved by FTP to your server. Let me give an example to illustrate this. Suppose your powerpoint file is titled goat.ppt. When you go through the conversion process you will end up with one file named "goat.htm" (by default they use htm not html) and a folder titled "goat_files." You must move both to your server but when you create the link from your document you link to just the goat.htm. The reason you convert your file to htm or html is so people who don't have PowerPoint can see your presentation. It would be much easier to just mount the actual PowerPoint presentation and link to it (I often do both). Or some people save their PowerPoint presentations as a pdf file.

Name it module5c.ppt or module5c.pptx and mount in you www directory.
