Worksheet 11
Overview: You will prepare a simple non-linear presentation, save it as a web page and then transfer the files that were created through this process to your NCSU web space using a FTP program.
Creating a Non-Linear Presentation:
1. Prepare a simple non-linear presentation. There were several examples in the lesson. To see another example click on the Santa_Gertrudis.htm or download this presentation as a PowerPoint presentation (Santa_Gertrudis.ppt). I have prepared a word document that shows all the hyperlinks used within the presentation. When you save your presentation, be sure there are no blank spaces in the name of your saved presentation (I have used the underline character above in the file names; there are no blank spaces). Files with blank spaces in their name don’t work on the web.
Mounting your presentation to the web:
2. In a previous lesson, you were to access your university web space and give the public the right to view documents in your www folder. This next activity assumes you have down that. It also assumes you have downloaded a FTP program. (there is one built into Windows XP).
A. After you prepare your PowerPoint Presentation, click on File and then Click on “Save as Web Page”. Be and sure to click on the “Publish” button and then click on “All Browsers Listed Above.” If you don’t the resulting files will look good in Internet Explorer but will not display properly in Netscape. When you are done go ahead and click on Publish.
B. The process in step A will create one file and one folder – a htm file and a sub-folder with a bunch of files in it. If the name of your PowerPoint presentation was flowers.ppt, the above process will create a file named “flowers.htm” and a sub-folder titled “flowers_files” When you move your presentation to the web server you will need to transfer the “flowers.htm” file and the entire sub-directory titled “flowers_files”. If you want people to also down load the original PowerPoint presentation, you will need to transfer the “flowers.ppt” file also.
3. After the above files are created, you will open your ftp program and connect to ftp.ncsu.edu. Transfer the files you have created to your www directory. Now when you type in the url (http://www4.ncsu.edu/~unityid/filename.htm) you should be able to see the presentation. If I had created the flowers.htm file the url would be http://www4.ncsu.edu/~gemoore/flowers.htm.
4. You will place this presentation in your web space and then send me the url.
