Lesson Five
Systematic Design
Introduction:
Curriculum planning is an intricate and complex process. This week we will examine how systematic design allows us to look at the "big picture" to give consideration to a multitude of curriculum related factors. We will also examine how systematic design can be used to counter act potential problems in our complex educational system. I think that you will find this "organized way of doing something” to be a useful tool in tackling trends and issues in WDE/CTE while carrying out a curriculum development project.
After the midterm exam, you will be asked to select an area of content in agriculture in which you will develop a course. Use this week to begin to reflect on a current trend or issue in agriculture that the public may need to be educated. An example might be a "Food Supply Safety" course for high school students or a new 4-H project book for aquaculture. You may even want to consider a training guide for an extension program.
Objectives:
-
Examine the application of systematic design in Workforce Development curriculum development.
-
Synthesize a systems model for use in Workforce Development curriculum development.
-
Identify the procedures used for the development of North Carolina Standard Course of Study.
Readings:
-
Read Chapter 2 "Contemporary Designs for Curriculum Development" in Finch and Crunkilton's Curriculum Development in Vocational and Technical Education located in Moodle. Pay attention to Figure 2-2.
-
Review the Procedures Manual for the Development of North Carolina Standard Course of Study. In this document, you will see a system/models developed by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for the development of Workforce Development/ Career and Technical Education courses. Contemporary Designs for Curriculum Development
Assignments:
-
If you were an agricultural education curriculum designer in your state, which design model would you use to carry out the process? In approximately two pages tell which model you would choose and fully explain why you chose this design.
[ systems model for performance improvement, curriculam pedagogy assessment model, integrated system for workforce education curriculum, performance-based instructional design system, or the thematic curriculum framework] -
Create a systems model (p. 30-31 in Chapter 2) that can be used by curriculum developers when dealing with a trend or issue. In your model, be sure to include the five parts of a systems model: the environment, input, process, output, and feedback. Your work should illustrate to me that you spent time in a reflective process to complete this assignment. A sample is here another sample (with an Extension slant) is here.
-
The midterm exam will be an open book exam, which you will complete week after next. It will be available in Moodle.
