Correlational and Causal-Comparative Research in Agricultural and Extension Education

Introduction:

Because of logistical and ethical considerations, it is often difficult to conduct experimental research in schools and in extension. The use of correlational and causal-camparative research is often the next best thing. At first correlational research may sound confusing with all the different types of correlations that can be performed, but it is really very simple. In this lesson we will learn more about correlational research.

bullet icon Describe the main characteristics of correlational research.
bullet icon List the purposes and limitations of correlational research.
bullet icon Describe the general approach to conducting correlational research.
bullet icon Differentiate between a predictor and a criterion variable.
bullet icon List and describe different types of correlation coefficients.
bullet icon Describe the interpretation of correlation coefficients.

bullet icon Read Chapter 15 "Correlational Research" and Chapter 16 Causal-Comparative Research" in
How to Design and Evaluate Research in Education (Fraenkel & Wallen).

bullet icon What keeps older members participating in the 4-H program?  Researchers in Ohio (Norland & Bennett) conducted a correlational study to see what factors were related to 4-H satisfaction of older 4-H members. Read "Youth Participation" from the Journal of Extension (Spring, 1993) to see an example of correlational research. Note: the diagram the researchers use to show the strength of the relationships.
