- Volunteers are essential to the success of the North
Carolina 4-H program, and they can serve in many different roles. One
of the most intimidating parts of the work of 4-H Extension agents is
the management of volunteers who assist in program design and delivery.
This task, it is estimated, consumes as much as 30 percent of the scheduled work
time for 4-H youth development professionals.
- During this lesson, you will learn about the
different types of positions for 4-H volunteers, including a review of
sample job descriptions, and the process and rationale for screening
volunteers.
- There are six categories of service to consider in
examining a volunteer’s contributions to the 4-H program. These
are:
- Direct programs to youth (club leader, project
leader, etc.),
- ervices to other volunteers (master volunteers who
teach others),
- Indirect services to 4-H through technical or support
services (donors, sponsors, etc.),
- Advocacy for youth or for 4-H (actively supporting
through networks),
- Administrative services (bookkeeping, legal services,
etc.), and
- Advisory committees and councils at the county,
district and state levels.
