Identify and describe the major roles of agriculture teachers.

Introduction: What is good teaching?  How do we know when we see it?  How do we measure it?  Is teaching an art or a science?  Are good teachers born or can they be developed?  These are all questions that continue to be raised by educators and the general public.  Everyone wants good teachers in our schools and we would do well to answer these questions as completely as possible.

Learning
Activities:
Good teachers are essential to the development of students.  Think about the best teacher, or teachers, that you have ever had.  What made them a good teacher?  Write down their traits or behaviors that made them good teachers in your opinion.  Then read Lois Berry Clement's article on The 10 Talents of Teaching (available soon).  See if any of your teacher chracteristics match her description of the 10 talents you need to teach.

lightbulb symbolizing idea Effective teaching is typically measured by the ability of the teacher to influence student achievement.  What characteristics do teachers exhibit in the classroom that really contribute to effective teaching?  Rosenshine and Furst identified characteristics of effective teachers back in the 1970's.  Research in effective teaching has consistently found those traits to be associated with effective teaching.  Complete the Behaviors that Make a Difference Checklist and send it to the instructor.  The instructor will e-mail you the answers.  (This is not a graded activity.)

View Agriculture teachers serve many roles within the school system.  It is important to recognize that teaching agriculture involves a variety of roles and responsiblities.  Download the Power Point presentation on Roles of Agriculture Teachers.  View the presentation here.

Assignments: Teachers must display dispositions.  Download and read the story of Virgil T. Fry, a teacher that was fired.  View the story here.  Then write a brief essay that includes reasons that Virgil T. Fry should be fired and reasons he should not be fired.  After giving the reasons, take a position.  Defend your position to either fire Virgil or keep VIrgil as a teacher at that school.
