Describe the agricultural education courses taught in North Carolina.
Be familiar with the types of agricultural courses taught in other states.
Identify curriculum materials available from curriculum centers
Discuss the standard course of study and VoCATS.

Introduction: What should you teach? Many states have state approved curriculum guides that teachers are expected to follow. In other states, teachers in individual schools determine what it is they teach. Some states have sophisticated curriculum centers that sell a variety of curriculum materials. In this lesson, we will learn more about what is taught in CTE and the curriculum centers

Learning
Activities:
Take the Curriculum pretest to see what you know about what is taught in agricultural education!

What types of courses are taught in agricultural education. Let's visit several states to see what courses are taught in agricultural education..
  • North Carolina Scroll down the page to access the blueprints and curriculum guide.
  • Michigan (Agriscience and Natural Resources Education is what the program in Michigan is called. This web site is little funky but you should be able to get a feel for the curriculum)
  • Texas (you will need Adobe Acrobat to read this document)
  • Georgia (this web site has some real helpful information but you have to dig to find some of it. Hint: page 123 of the course descriptions is where agriculture starts)
  • Oklahoma (finally, a page that doesn't require Adobe Acrobat)
  • Wisconsin (you may find their emphasis on teaching units a little different than the other sites)

Several states have curriculum materials centers. Not only do they handle curriculum they produce, but curriculum materials from other states. Visit the various centers to see what curriculum aids are available. As a beginning teacher, you don't have to reinvent the wheel.

View an on-line PowerPoint presentation on Curriculum in Agricultural Education. Click here to download the file to your computer as a PowerPoint presentation (You will need PowerPoint on your computer if you do this to view the slide show).

Assignments:  Send an e-mail to all the members of the class and tell them which course you would like to teach out of all the courses listed in this lesson and why. If the course is from out of state, identify where the course is from. The instructor will send you an e-mail a week before this lesson. You should save this e-mail and then check "reply to all" in order to e-mail all the class members.
