Because of
accreditation requirements, the state budgeting process, and student
demand and needs, several different degree programs are offered in the
Department of Agricultural and Extension Education. A brief description
of each degree program follows. To learn more about each degree, click
on the link at the end of the description.
- Master's of Agricultural
Education - This on-campus degree program is for students who
want to gain an in depth knowledge of school-based agricultural
education. This degree requires a minimum of 36 semester hours. This
degree does not
require the
writing of a thesis. Upon completion of this degree, the
student qualifies for a Master's level (M) teaching license (provided
he or she already possesses the "A" teaching license in agricultural

- Master's of Science in
Agricultural Education - This on-campus degree program is for
students who want to gain an
in depth knowledge of school-based agricultural education and gain
experience in conducting research. This degree
requires a minimum of 36 semester hours and does require the
writing of a thesis. Students received 6 hours of credit for writing a
thesis. Upon completion of this degree, the student
qualifies for a Master's level (M) teaching license (provided he or she
already possesses the "A" teaching license in agricultural education)...more
- Master's of Extension
Education - This on-campus degree program is for students who
want to gain an
in depth knowledge of nonformal education that is focused on extension,
youth development, rural development, international education and
family and consumer science. This degree
requires a minimum of 36 semester hours. This degree does not require the

- Master's of Science in
Extension Education - This on-campus degree program is for
students who want to gain an
in depth knowledge of nonformal education that is focused on extension,
youth development, rural development, international education and
family and consumer science. Students also develop skills in conducting
research. This degree
requires a minimum of 36 semester hours and does require the
writing of a thesis. Students received 6 hours of credit for writing a

- Master's of Agricultural
Education (Distance Track) - Don't be fooled by the name. This
on-line degree program is for agricultural teachers, extension agents,
and other professionals involved in communicating agriculture and
family and consumer science information to others. In this degree
program, the term "agricultural education" embodies the USDA definition
which encompasses the broad spectrum of knowledge covered in what is
typically thought of as extension education and school-based
agricultural education. We advertise this program as the GRAEDE program
- GRaduate Agricultural & Extension Distance Education program.
This
degree program has four required courses
but the rest of the program is custom designed to meet the needs of the
students. This degree requires a minimum of 36 hours. This degree does not require the
writing of a thesis. Appropriately prepared students can receive the
"M" teaching license upon completion of the program (provided he or she
first has an "A" license in agricultural education). All of the program

- 6th Year Certificate
- Teachers of agriculture can complete the requirements for a 6th Year
Graduate Certificate. This is comparable to the Educational Specialist
degree (however, NCSU does not offer such a degree)...more
- Doctorate in Agricultural
and Extension Education - The Department offers an Ed.D.
(Doctor of Education) degree in Agricultural and Extension Education.
This degree programs is considered to be an on-campus degree and
requires a minimum of 72 hours past the Bachelor's degree. A doctoral
program is a research based degree, thus numerous statistics and
research methodology courses are required. A doctoral program is very
rigorous and demanding. It is not something one does on a whim. At
least three years of successful experience as an agricultural teacher
or extension educator is required for admission to the program...more
