Instructor's response to Lesson 5/Exercise 2

Below are several statements of performance objectives. Indicate which objectives meet the following conditions (each could have more than one answer).
  1. Acceptable as written
  2. Performance is unclear
  3. Conditions are omitted
  4. The criteria are omitted
C, D      1. The student will define circumference. The performance is to define, but the conditions and criteria are not stated

B, C, D  2. The student will take four pictures of different monkeys at the zoo. Performance is unclear. Is the student to use a camera, or shoplift four pictures from the gift shop? The conditions are not stated. Conditions might include "given a camera...", or "during a field trip to the zoo...". The criteria are not stated. If the student is to shoplift the pictures, does the action count if he or she is caught?

A     3. Using a spreadsheet and the kilowatts used each month last year, the student will create a calculation that accurately determines the annual average of kilowatts used.

D     4. Given a diagram of a field, the student will plan a cotton seedling check. The criteria for assessing the plan are not stated. Must the plan cover the whole field, or just a sampling?

D     5. The student will organize 10 folders in one-half hour. This one is slightly tricky. If we include the criteria, "organize 10 folders alphabetically", then it becomes acceptable. The conditions are the 10 folders.

C, D   6. Plot the growth of soybeans in three plots treated with three different fertilizers. What information and tools (conditions) do we provide for the learner? For example, do they use a sheet of graph paper or a spreadsheet to create the graph? Last, what criteria do we use to judge the graph—the number of colors used, or the accuracy of the plot?
