GUIDELINES FOR INTEVIEWING A PRINCIPAL

 

Procedure:

 

Select a school that has an agricultural program.

 

Preferably the interview will be in person, but it can be over the phone given the time constraints.

 

Contact the principal and tell him/her that you are enrolled in an education class at North Carolina State and one of the assignments is to interview the principal. The interview shouldn’t take more 30 minutes. Ask when we would be a convenient time for an interview.

 

Offer to provide a copy of the questions you will be asking in case the principal would like to look them over in advance.

 

Ask for permission to take notes while interviewing the principal.

 

When you leave, thank the principal for his/her cooperation and time.

Your written report should contain this information plus any other pertinent information that you deem appropriate appropriate.

 

1. How long have you been the principal at this school? At other schools?

 

2. What are your educational experiences prior to becoming a principal?

 

3. What are the biggest challenges of being a principal?

 

4. Briefly describe the administrative structure of the school district.

 

5. What do you perceive to be the purpose of the agricultural education program in this school?

 

6. How does a school benefit from having an agricultural education program? Are there drawbacks?

 

7. What do you perceive to be the components of a complete program in agricultural education?

 

8. What are the characteristics of students who enroll in agricultural education?

 

9. Does the agriculture teacher have any different responsibilities than other teachers in the school?

 

10. What is one thing that could be done to improve agricultural education in this state?
