Introduction:

New teachers are often swamped by individuals telling them to join this teacher organization or that teacher organization. Just what do these organizations do and why should a teacher join them? Hopefully, after completing this lesson you will have a better understanding of professional organizations and why they are important. You will also understand more about the legal rights of teachers and students.
Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this unit the learner should be able to:
* Identify the legal rights and responsibilities of teachers.
* Display and promote the ethical behavior of teachers.
* Distinguish between the stages of teacher development.
*Recognize the purposes and goals of professional organizations in teacher development.
*Determine the differences between the National Education Association and
         the American Federation of Teachers.
*Describe the activities of the National Council for Agricultural Education.
*List the reasons why agriculture teachers should belong to the
        National Association of Agricultural Educators.
Instructional
Activities:
* Take the interactive pretest on professionalism and professional organizations in education.
* Read Chapter 10 School Law and Ethics & Chapter 12 Your First Classroom in Sadker and Sadker.
* Visit the National Association of Agricultural Educators to learn more about your professional organization.
* Visit the North Carolina Agriculture Teachers Association web site. Check out the various links.
* The National Council for Agricultural Education promotes a number of projects that benefit agriculture teachers.          Spend some time at this site.
* The Assocation for Career and Technical Education is the umbrella organization for all vocational educators. Spend some time at this site. What is TECHNIQUES?
* Learn more about your state CTE affiliate of the ACTE. Go to http://www.acteonline.org/about/states/index.cfm and  click on your state.
* Many teachers belong to the North Carolina Association of Educators. Check them out.
* One of the most popular national organizations is the National Education Association. Visit their site by clicking here.
* Another teacher organization is the American Federation of Teachers. This group is not found in North Carolina and is considered by some to be more of a union than a professional organization because it is affiliated with the AFL-CIO.

    National Association of Agricultural Educators
    Association for Career and Technical Education
    National Education Association
    American Federation of Teachers
Which one(s) would you most likely join and why? Tell the rest of the class why you choose that organization(s) and provide some evidence that your decision is well thought out. Are there any you would not join? Why?
