Barbara Flanagan has some excellent suggestions for teachers who assign reading from textbooks.  Go to: http://www.ldonline.org/ld_indepth/teaching_techniques/understanding_textbooks.html.   Read “Improving Students’ Understanding of Textbook Content.”

The following link provides some good tips on how to improve reading comprehension for students.  This might even be helpful to post in a classroom. http://www.how-to-study.com/Reading%20Comprehension.htm

Educators have developed a number of indices for determining the reading level of educational materials.  One of those that is often used is Fry’s Readabilty Graph.  Directions for use and the graph can be found at http://school.discovery.com/schrockguide/fry/fry.html.  Another commonly used method of determining reading levels of educational materials is the SMOG Formula.  You can find information on the SMOG index at http://www.med.utah.edu/pated/authors/readability.html.

Select an agricultural education textbook that is used at the secondary level and determine the reading level of that textbook.  Note:  This is a learning activity and is not something you are required to submit to the instructor.

Read “Writing and Learning Skills—A Good Combination in Agricultural Education.”  This article in the Agricultural Education Magazine suggests ways to incorporate appropriate writing activities into lessons to reinforce learning of the content.
