Read Direct Instruction, a report by the Education Consortium of States. This report is a comprehensive discussion of direct instruction as a practice and the research that supports this approach. The instructions for accessing this document are as follows:
  1. Click on the following url: http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/eresources/dbfinder.html This will get you to the NCSU Libraries database finder.
  2. The databases are listed alphabetically. Click on the letter E to search for databases that begin with that letter. Scroll down the page until you find ERIC.
  3. Click on Search via EBSCO
  4. If you are accessing this site from off-campus, you will need to login. Your login ID is the first letter of your first name, the first letter of your middle name and the first six letters of your last name. The password is your social security number. You might have to click on ERIC via EBSCOhost again from the list.
  5. On the next screen, after Find, type: Direct Instruction and choose the Exact Phrase option. Then click on Search.
  6. Go through the pages until you find an article that is titled simply, "Direct Instruction". (When I did the search three times it was entry number 115, but I will not guarantee that this will be the entry number when you conduct the search.) The reference number for this article is ED447424. This can be used to verify that you have found the correct article.  You can also click on the Advanced Search tab at the top, scroll about halfway down that screen, and enter the reference number in the box labelled ERIC Number. Click on Search and this should take you directly to the link for the article.
  7. Click on Full Text from EDRS.
  8. The document should appear as an Acrobat (pdf) file. It is 10 pages long.

  9. Read the document on line or print it off if you prefer.
Assignments:

This week you have two assignments:
Compare and contrast the problem solving approach to teaching and direct instruction. Be sure to explain how they are alike and how they are different. This should be brief and should be no more than one page.

Develop a lesson plan using the Direct Instruction Lesson Plan Format. Note. This is a plan for only one day of instruction (50-90 minutes), so be sure to be realistic as to what can be taught in that amount of time. Select a topic that you feel is adapted to direct instruction.
