Recognition of Teaching Recognition of Scholarship
  • Recognized by the North Carolina Association of Career and Technical Education as the Outstanding Career and Technical Education Professional in 2008.
  • Inducted into the North Carolina State University Academy of Outstanding Teachers in 2005.
  • Selected by the University of Illinois as an “exemplary teacher” Twelve professors from across the US were selected to be involved in a yearlong USDA sponsored study on teaching excellence during 2004-05. Each agriculture college in American could nominate one professor and 12 were selected from among those nominated.
  • An on-line distance education program I conceived and implemented, the Licensure in Education for Agricultural Professionals (LEAP) program, received an Honorable Mention in the American Distance Education Consortium competition in 2004 for the Excellence in Distance Education Award. This honor indicates the program was one of the top five distance education programs in America for 2004.
  • Russell Guin Outstanding Agricultural Educator Award—American Association for Agricultural Education, 2003 (one person a year receives this award. This award is to recognize the top individual in the profession)
  • Distinguished Teaching Award — American Association for Agricultural Education, Southern Region, 1998.
  • Ensminger-Interstate Distinguished Teacher Award — National Association of Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) — 1996 (one person a year receives this award).
  • Fellow — American Association for Agricultural Education — 1992 (two people are selected annually).
  • H. M. "Hub" Cotton Distinguished Faculty Award — Louisiana State University  1989 (One professor a year receives this award.)
  • Outstanding Teaching Award — NACTA — Southern Region —  1988

  • Outstanding Secondary Education Teaching Award — Kappa Delta Pi (student education honorary) — Purdue University — 1979.
  • Outstanding Graduate Associate Teaching Award — The Ohio State University  1975.  (Five teaching associates a year are selected for this award.)
  • Outstanding Young Member Award — National Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association (NVATA) — Ohio — 1973.
  • Outstanding Young Educator Award — Beverly/Waterford, Ohio Jaycees — 1973.
  • NVATA Career Orientation Award — Region IV — 1972.
  • NVATA Ideas Unlimited Award — Region IV — 1972.
  • An essay on the future of Southern Agriculture submitted by graduate student Katie Murray to the Future of Southern Agriculture student essay contest (sponsored by Sygenta and the Farm Press in 2009) was the runner-up essay. Katie received a $4,000 cash prize for the essay. I was Katie’s faculty advisor for the essay.
  • A research paper (Effects of an Introductory Agricultural Education Course on the Agricultural Literacy and Perceptions of Agriculture of Urban Students) authored by a graduate student (Riedel, J) under the guidance of Beth Wilson, Jim Flowers and myself was the outstanding graduate student paper presented to the Southern Agricultural Education Research Conference in 2007.
  • Distinguished Alumni  Award – 2007 -- Tarleton State University
  • A research paper (Walking the Talk: Factors Related to the Motivation of Teachers to Conduct the SAE Component of the High School Agricultural Education Program) authored by me and a colleague presented.at the Southern Agricultural Education Research Conference in 2006 was the runner-up for the Outstanding Research Paper
  • Was one of two speakers selected to speak on the occasion of the 100th Anniversary Celebration of the College of Agriculture at the University of Arkansas (2005).
  • Was selected to present the Distinguished Lecture at the annual meeting of the American Association for Teacher Education in Agriculture in 2005.
  • Was selected to present the Blue Ribbon Address to the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture in 2005.
  • A paper/poster titled “Do Professors who Teach With Energy and Concern Give Their Students More Motivation?” written by NCSU undergraduate student, Kristina Vester was selected as the outstanding paper at the 2005 NCSU Undergraduate Teaching Symposium. I was one of two mentors who guided her research.
  • Invited to represent the Western Hemisphere at a conference on the Developments in and future of agricultural education in Asia, the Pacific, North America, Europe and the Netherlands: Insights from practice and research at Wageningen University in the Netherlands in March of 2004. The paper presented was titled. “From Sows, Cows and Plows to Cells, Gels and Dells: The Continuing Evolution of Agricultural Education in North America.
  • The dissertation of my doctoral student, Marshall Stewart, was recognized at the outstanding dissertation in America in the field of career and technical education by Omicron Tau Theta, a national honorary in Career and Technical Education. This recognition occurred in 2004.
  • A paper “Emerging Educational and Agricultural Trends and Their Impact on the Secondary Agricultural Education Program” presented to the American Vocational Education Research Association in 2003 by Marshall Stewart, one of my doctoral students, was selected as the outstanding young scholar presentation.
  • Editor, The Agricultural Education Magazine, 1998-2000.
  • Outstanding Poster, Runner-up — 1997 — Southern Agricultural Education Conference —
  • Outstanding Research Paper, Runner-up — 1996 — Eastern Agricultural Education Research Conference. — “The Impact of Block Scheduling on Instruction, FFA and SAE in Agricultural Education".
  • Distinguished Service Award —1995 — American Vocational Education Research Association — (This award is for overall contributions to the field of vocational education research)
  • Distinguished Service Award —1994—Southern Region of the American Association for Agricultural Education — (This award is for overall contributions to the field of agricultural education)
  • Distinguished Researcher Award — 1993 — Southern Region of the American Association for Agricultural Education — (This award is for sustained research contributions to the field of agricultural education.)
  • Outstanding Research Paper — 1993 — Southern Agricultural Education Research Conference. — "Who's in Charge Here? An Analysis of the Leadership in Agricultural Education Provided by the United States Department of Agriculture".

  • Cyril Asiabaka, Ph.D. advisee, had his dissertation selected as one of the top five in the nation in vocational education by the American Vocational Education Research Association, 1984.
  • My dissertation was selected by the American Vocational Education Research Association as one of the top five dissertations in vocational education in 1976. Over 40 dissertations were submitted.
