SAE Lesson PlansThe Filing Cabinet - Lesson 5

Unit: Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) Programs

Lesson: Working for the Man: Internships (Lesson 5)

Objectives:

At the end of the class the learner will be able to:
  1. Define internship.

2. List five reasons why an internship is a good SAE choice.

3. Differentiate between a training agreement and a training plan.

4. List seven guidelines to follow in an internship program.

5. Describe the hour restrictions regulating the employment of minors.

6. Identify five hazardous occupations in which students cannot have an internship program.

References and Teaching Aids: 1. Computer with PowerPoint 97 and a projection device or an overhead projector.

2. "Internship" PowerPoint 97 presentation (internship.ppt)

3. Internship pretest  (Answer Sheet)

4. Record keeping pages for placement that your state uses.

5. Internship case studies (Answer Sheet)

Teaching Procedure:
 A. Interest Approach:
  • Pass out the internship pretest and have the students complete it. Ask them how confident they are of their answers.
  • B. Problem Statement: (to be written on the board or overhead)
      "What is an internship?"
"What are the benefits of having an internship as part of your SAE program?"
"Are there any legal restrictions regarding internships?"

    C. Teaching Steps:

    1. After the interest approach and posting the problem statement on the board, show the PowerPoint presentation on Internships (placement). The presentation parallels the pretest. As you go through the presention review the correct answers on the pretest.

    2. Divide the class into small groups and give each group the internship case studies. After each group has had time to answer the questions, have the groups report their answers. Discuss the answers as a class.

      3. Distribute the type of placement record keeping pages used in your state. Explain how the records are to be kept. If you state does not have a SAE record book, record books that match these lessons (The North Carolina SAE Record Book) can be ordered from Dr. Jim Flowers at North Carolina State. Contact him for more information at jim_flowers@ncsu.edu
    D. Review:
    1. Go around the room and have each student state one fact they learned from the days lesson.
