20th Annual Waynesville Bull Sale
By Gary Gregory, Roger McCraw and Beecher Allison

The 20th Annual NC BCIP Waynesville Bull Sale was held on January 8 at the Haywood County Agricultural and Activities Center before a large crowd of interested bidders. For the third year the sale was conducted as a video auction held in conjunction with the Western North Carolina Area Beef Conference. A total of 21 bulls sold for an average price of $1,750.

The Area Conference began on a cold morning at the Mountain Research Station. After introductions by Ms. Becky Davis, Beecher Allison, Area Extension Specialist, reviewed beef research projects conducted at the station last summer with grazing stocker cattle. The project currently underway was also introduced. Following presentations on research projects, producers in attendance moved to the bull test station. Bulls were penned so they could be easily viewed. Potential buyers had an excellent opportunity to evaluate the bulls and discuss their performance data with consignors and Roger McCraw, Beecher Allison and Gary Gregory, extension personnel involved with the program.

Then the group moved to the Haywood County Agricultural and Activities Center where they were treated to a lunch provided by the sponsors of the beef conference. Following lunch, Dr Kenneth Esbenshade, Department Head for the Animal Science Department at North Carolina State University, was the guest speaker. DR Esbenshade's enlightening presentation centered around current activities and future direction of the Animal Science Department at North Carolina State University. After the speaker the video auction was conducted.
