A large group of cattlemen attended the Seventeenth Annual Waynesville Performance Tested Bull Sale on Saturday, March 1,1997. The sale was held at the Western North Carolina Agricultural Center in Fletcher. The 30 lots sold for a total of $37,375 with an average price of $1246 per bull.
The Angus breed topped the sale by having 17 lots selling at an average of $1344. The above average birth weight bulls averaged $1378 on the nine bulls sold. Marvin Kyle of Arden, NC sold the overall high selling Angus bull. His Lot 32, a Rito 9M9 of 2036 Scotch Cap son, sold to R&V Warren Farms of Candler, NC for a price of $2150. Harley Tate, Lake Junaluska consigned Lot 54, a son of Black Bull 6807 71Y. His balanced EPD's of 3.2 for birth, 21 weaning, 31 yearling and 16 milk, along with his performance, allowed him to be the second high selling above average birth weight Angus bull. He sold for $1750 to Boyce Robinson of Pisgah Forest, NC.
Lot 24, consigned by Jason Brown of Franklin, NC was the top selling below average birth weight Angus bull. Gerald Frye, Lawndale purchased the Bon View Emulation EXT 473 son for $1800. Larry Sloop, Sherrills Ford consigned the second high selling below average bull. His Lot 50, a Rito 2RT2 of OB5 RR Traveler son, sold to Larry Roper, Horse Shoe for $1600. Eight below average birth weight bulls sold for an average of $1306.
The Simmental breed was the second high averaging breed. Three outstanding Simmental bulls sold for an average of $1,283. Jimmy Smith, Cove City, NC had the high selling Simmental bull at $1600. Lot 107, a son of DS Black Zinger 141B with EPD's of -1.1 birth, 13 weaning, 27 yearling and 8 milk, sold to Jack Leatherwood of Waynesville, NC. Lot 104 and Lot 106 tied for second high selling Simmental bull at $1125. Mike Connatser, Maryville, TN consigned lot 104, a DS Caufitime T41 72X son. He sold to L.A. Cogburn, Canton, NC. Lot 106 was consigned by Douglas Peterson, Wilkesboro, NC. This CCF 124C son sold to Frank Smart, Clyde, NC.
One Charolais bull sold for $1275. Lot 82 was consigned by Jerry Pritchard of Marion, NC. The WC Jeremiah 7124P son sold to Haskell Garrison, Weaverville, NC.
Seven Gelbveih bulls sold for an average of $1057. Leading the Gelbvieh bulls were Lots 87 and 93 both selling for $1400. Ira Jones of Plum Branch, SC consigned the Lot 87 bull, a DDM Mr. Sherman Tank U609 son. He sold to Glenn Wright of McCormick, SC. Lot 93 a black purebred son of HHF Dave D8 was consigned by J-Bob Farms, Biscoe, NC.
Two Hereford bulls sold for an average of $1000. Both of these polled bulls were consigned by Porter Claxton of Weaverville, NC. Lot 83 was purchased by Grady Parker, Cullowhee, NC on a bid of $1000. Lot 84 was purchased by Rex Plemmons, Candler, NC. WV CCC PPH Grassmaster was the sire of both of these bulls.
South Carolina producers purchased four of the bulls in the sale while the remaining bulls were purchased by North Carolina breeders.
