NC BCIP Forage Bull Test

Bulls enrolled on the 4th North Carolina BCIP Forage Bull Test were weighed off-test on August 13 and 14. Gains during the final 28-day period dropped off somewhat, as expected, from the pace the bulls had been on. The 29 Senior bulls finished the test on coastal bermudagrass and posted an overall average daily gain (ADG) of 2.73 lbs for the 224-day test. The 35 Juniors finished on millet and reached an overall ADG of 2.63 lbs.

Averages for characteristics of the bulls on test by age group are shown in the tables on the next page.

Qualifying bulls from this test will sell on Saturday, November 9, 1996 at the Sampson County Livestock Arena in Clinton. Please note that the sale time has been changed to 1:00 p.m. The time was changed to allow time for an educational program in the morning preceding the sale. This program, planned by the Sampson County Beef Council, will begin at 9:00 a.m. and topics will focus on bull management. Lunch will be provided following the program. Plenty of time will be allowed for you to inspect the bulls prior to the sale. Plan to attend both the program and the sale.

If you would like to nominate bulls for the 5th North Carolina Forage Bull Test and have not already notified the NC BCIP office, please call 919/515-2761 and leave your name, address, and the number of bulls you plan to nominate. We will send you a copy of the Rules and Regulations and nomination forms. Nomination deadline is November 1, 1996. Bulls will be delivered to the station on December 4 to begin this test.

NC BCIP Butner Test

A total of 112 bulls are on test for the 13th Butner BCIP Bull Test. These bulls were consigned by 59 different producers and represent herds in 33 counties of the state. Of the total number of bulls on test, 88 are Angus, 9 Simmental, 8 Charolais, 5 Gelbvieh, 1 Hereford, and 1 South Devon. They have gone on feed well and have experienced few minor health problems.

Overall, the bulls averaged 81 lb. on birth weight, weighed 799 when they went on test on August 14, were 47.8 inches tall and had an average weight per day of age of 2.66 lb. Weight per day of age is lower than usual and probably results from the abnormal seasonal weather and less creep due to higher feed costs. A sample of the bulls was weighed on September 11 and it appears that gains to this point are good.

NC BCIP Salisbury Bull Test

Bulls were delivered to the 24th Salisbury BCIP Bull Test on August 21. They were weighed on test on September 9 and 10. There are 55 bulls on test this year from 29 consignors located in 22 counties. Of these, 44 are Angus, 6 Gelbvieh, 2 Charolais, 2 Simmental and 1 Hereford. The total number of bulls is down considerably from previous years due to the higher feed costs that the industry is currently facing.

These bulls averaged 80 lb. on birth weight, weighed 770 when they went on test on September 10, were 47.2 inches tall and had an average weight per day of age of 2.74 lb.

Waynesville BCIP Bull Test

Bulls were delivered to the 17th Waynesville BCIP Bull Test on September 18. There are 44 bulls on test this year from 27 consignors. Of these, 29 are Angus, 2 Hereford, 5 Simmental, 10 Gelbvieh and 1 Charolais.
