New Departmental Extension Leader

Dr. Steve Washburn assumed the role of Departmental Extension Leader for the Department of Animal Science effective July 1. As the Departmental Extension Leader, Dr. Washburn will coordinate and lead the extension activities in the department, including the development and implementation of extension programming related to the animal industries. Dr. Washburn will continue to conduct a statewide educational program as an Extension Specialist in the area of dairy records and reproductive management of dairy cattle. He will also serve as Commodity Coordinator of the Dairy Extension Group and will be the departmental liaison for United DHIA and for the North Carolina Dairy Producers Association.

Dr. Washburn has been an Extension Specialist in the Department of Animal Science since 1986, serving as a resource for the dairy and beef industries in areas of reproductive physiology and management. Although Dr. Washburn will work with all animal commodity groups in a leadership role, he will be less active in subject matter support for the beef industry. Additional support in reproductive program efforts for the beef industry will be an area for future consideration.

Dr. Washburn maintains an active research program with emphasis on effective control of the cow's estrous cycle. In addition, he is a leader of an interdisciplinary team studying production, reproduction, health, economics, and environmental aspects of dairy production systems using pasture as the primary forage in contrast to feeding cows in confinement using total mixed rations.
