Beef Char-Grill and Pork Cookery

M. C. Claeys and S. B. Rogers

The North Carolina State 4-H Beef Char-Grill and Pork Cookery Presentation contests were held July 23 at Carter Finley Stadium. This fun filled morning of grilling excitement was held during the week of North Carolina 4-H Congress in which over 750 4-H youth, volunteers and extension personnel from all across the state participated.

Eight contestants from various districts grilled-up some of the tastiest beef recipes in North Carolina. After the judges had their sampling of the outstanding recipes Justin Buff of Union County was declared the gold medal winner with "Buff's Beef" kabobs. The silver grill award went to Cabot Cobb of Vance County for his very tasty recipe using London Broil. The bronze medal was awarded to "Beef Kabobs from the Grill of Amanda", prepared by Amanda Singleton of Buncombe County.

Meanwhile across the way six other contestants had their grills fired up for the Pork Cookery competition. After much taste testing by the judges of all the outstanding recipes. Top honors went to Lindsay Autry of Cumberland County for her glazed pork tenderloin recipe. The silver medal was awarded to "Lili's Sesame Pork Chops" prepared by Lilly olive of Durham County. Wesley Summers of Iredell County received the bronze medal for his "Olympic Spareribs".

After all the smoke had cleared it was a very successful, as well as, tasty event. A special thanks to the NC Pork Producers Association for sponsoring the Pork Cookery and the NC Cattlemen's Association for sponsoring the Beef Char-Grill.
