Stockman's Bowl Entry Form

Everyone that has any involvement with or in the cattle industry must attend the 1996 NC Beef Expo. This year the committee has put together an outstanding event for people of all ages. The committee has worked hard to have activities going at all times for the beef weekend. Education programs, quality cattle sales, entertainment, trade show venders, and much more have been assembled to draw people from every segment of the industry to unite under one roof.

The event will be held November 1and 2, at the Jim Graham Building at the State Fairgrounds, Raleigh. The activities will kick off Friday, November 1st with the Cattlemen's College starting at 12:30 pm. To assemble this program, speakers will come from all over the country to provide insight on the ever changing demands of the industry. To begin the program, Dave Nichols, a successful cattle breeder from Bridgewater, Iowa will motivate the attendees with a discussion of breeding and marketing cattle. Fred Williams, USDA Department of Standards, will present a talk on producing the right kind of cattle for todays industry. Fred is regarded as a leading expert in evaluation of livestock and will serve as the leader of the next part of the program, the cattle evaluation practicum. Everyone is invited to participate in this hands-on experience with evaluation. Dr. Greg Quakenbush, Pfizer veterinarian will provide the discussion concerning herd health management and assist with the Calf Management and Handling Contest that will follow the panel discussion section of the program. This educational program is sponsored by Pfizer through the grant program offered by the company. The Calf Management and Handling Contest will be brought to you via the cooperative efforts of Pfizer, Upjohn, Palco, Barn Loft, and NC Cooperative Extension Service. To enter the Calf Management and Handling Contest use the entry form at the conclusion of the newsletter.

Livestock Lessons Carnival and Beginning Judging events, an activity designed for fun with livestock information, will be offered throughout both days of the Expo. These programs for youth and adults will be offered for a duration of one hour and will start at 2:00 and 4:00 on Friday. Saturday the educational events will be offered at 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, 3:00 pm, 5:00 pm. Byron Burlingham, a 4-H Master Volunteer Leader from Pitt County, will be providing the leadership for this program along with the NCSU Animal Science Club.

Throughout the afternoon, viewing of the cattle offered for sale will be welcomed as well as attending the Beef Issues Skit Contest that will be in the Hall of Fame room starting at 5:00 pm. Youth will present the various views on issues confronting the beef industry in a fun skit format. Details of the Skit Contest are located in the EAH Newsletter. Please motivate and notify the youth of this Beef Council sponsored opportunity.

Following the Skit Contest a beef meal will be served at the Graham Building. Then dust off your boots and prepare to cut a rug to the sounds of the Continental Cowboys. The popular country band will get you in the mood for fun and socializing.

Saturday morning will start at 7:30 am for the youth competing in the State 4-H Stockman's Bowl. Entry forms for the event are at the end of this newsletter. For an outline of the contest please contact the office.

Several breed associations have joined efforts to unite and offer some of the finest genetic packages of each breed for sale under one roof on one day. This is a perfect opportunity for every segment of the industry to purchase the genetics that can advance their position in the cattle industry. The sales will start at 9:30 am at the sale ring of the Jim Graham Building. An outline of the sale times is provided below.

A new feature this year is the Stockman's Bull Sale. This year the breeds have united to provide one bull sale that starts at 1:00 pm. This sale will allow producers to obtain their bull battery for their programs in one setting. An added attraction to the sale is that the ring help for the sale will be the sale managers from the various breeds.

The grand finale for the event will be a special treat to all. BAXTER BLACK will be in the building to make you crack a grin and bust a gut with his cowboy humor and slightly twisted look at normal everyday happenings for cattle people. Advanced tickets for this event can be purchased at the NCCA office for seven dollars. Yes, you read the sentence correctly; only seven dollars for advanced tickets. For the procrastinators tickets will be $10 at the door.

Make your plans NOW to be at the premier cattle event of the year. Cattle people need to unite, as the committee has, and come share in the entertainment and educational activities. Come for the fun and obtain genetics to advance your beef enterprises. For further information contact the NCCA office or your breed association's representative.
