Fluorescent Lights No Problem for Breeding

S. P. Washburn

A question recently raised on the Internet had to do with whether fluorescent lights affect semen quality. A quick scan through the literature reveals little on this subject but a representative of 21st Century Genetics (Robert E. Bower, PhD, Vice-President, Technical Services) reported that many major semen labs in several countries including the U.S use fluorescent fixtures. He went on to say that at time of collection he has seen bull semen exposed to natural light, incandescent light, fluorescent light, etc., with no apparent effect or concern about fertility.
