Wolfpack Western Riding Team
The Wolfpack Western Riding Club at North Carolina State University was founded in August, 2008 by Oregon State University exchange student Justin Bubenik and North Carolina State Univerisity student Rebecca Bishopric with the help and guidance of coaches Mrs. Robin Brantley Lynn and Dr. Bob Mowrey.
The club was founded to provide the students of North Carolina State University an equal opportunity to learn about and respect the horse, horsemanship and to compete in IHSA horse shows. Additionally, the club strives to give all students at NCSU an opportunity to pursue their curiosity, love and passion for the horse and the art of western horsemanship, to improve the equestrian skills of its members through practice, instruction, and competition, and to provide a community atmosphere where great sportsmanship, the value of hard work and good communication skills are encouraged and enforced by the officer team and club members.
At the first show of the season the team pulled together and earned Reserve Champion Team at St. Andrews Presbyterian College on October 18th, 2008. Throughout the next three regular season shows the Wolfpack Western Riding Team tracked closely behind Martin Community College, St. Andrews Presbyterian College and Virginia Tech in the fight for IHSA Region 3 Championships. The Wolfpack Western Riding Team ended up as the 2009-2010 Reserve Champion Team for IHSA Zone 4, Region 3 – just 16 points away from Grand Champion which would have sent the team to IHSA Semifinals. What an amazing accomplishment for a team in their first year of competition! Wolfpack Western Riding Team members Justin Bubenik, Brittany Spears, and Brittany Karl gained enough points throughout the season to compete at the IHSA Regional Championships. Brittany Karl continued on and qualified for the IHSA Semifinals, and placed second at IHSA Semifinals at Morehead State University. Brittany Karl went on to place in the top ten at IHSA Nationals in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Wow! It is almost unheard of for a rider to gain enough points in one year of competition to qualify for IHSA Nationals!
Meanwhile, all team participants were able to gain experience riding a large array of horses and learning how challenging horseback riding could be.
We are so proud of our riders! This has been a grand start for a new team with a small base number of members and we have definitely made a huge impression on competitors throughout the season! This team would not be possible without the help of an amazing group of dedicated students that have worked so hard this year!
Without the continued support of NCSU Extension Horse Husbandry, Dr. Mowrey and our coach, Robin Lynn, we would cease to exist. Words cannot fully express our gratitude for your help and guidance this year!
