TITLE: Professor and Head,
Department of Animal Science
POSITION: The Department Head has overall responsibility for the leadership and administration of all teaching, research, and extension activities of a large and diverse department. The Head plays a key role in the recruitment and development of faculty and staff, oversees planning and evaluation of departmental programs, has the responsibility for allocation and accountability of departmental budgetary matters, and is actively involved in development activity or fund raising where appropriate. The Head also serves as the departmental representative in negotiations with college and university administrators, commodity groups, and consumers. The Head also is expected to promote collaborations with other university departments and with state, national, and international agencies. The headship is viewed as a full-time administrative position.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION: North Carolina State University is a land-grant institution with a strong mission for excellence in research, teaching, and extension. Current enrollment is approximately 22,000 undergraduate and 6,000 graduate students. The Animal Science Department is administratively located in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The department consists of 42 faculty and is nationally and internationally recognized with fully integrated programs in teaching, research and extension. The department offers the following degree programs: two-year associate, bachelor of science, master of animal science (non-thesis), master of science, and doctor of philosophy. Current departmental enrollment is approximately 500 undergraduate and 50 graduate students. Teaching and research programs are offered in anatomy, physiology, nutrition, genetics and management. Research includes both basic and applied elements, the applied components being influenced by regional and international needs, as well as those of the state's animal industries and consumers. An active extension program enhances animal production and ownership by developing educational programs and information to assist end users in adopting applicable technologies.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must have earned the Ph.D. in Animal Science or closely related discipline and have a record of outstanding professional achievement in the field with a working knowledge of current developments. The successful candidate must have a commitment to teaching, research and extension appropriate to a land-grant university and be able to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students, administrators and the public. Administrative experience is preferred.
