ANS COURSE INFORMATION

Freshmen and Sophomores: ANS 110, Introduction to Equine Science, is the pre-requisite for ANS 303 (Principles of Equine Evaluation), ANS 410 (Equine Management), and our new "Managing Growing and Performance Horses" course. ANS 110 is being offered online this summer, and the classroom version will be offered in Fall and Spring. It is restricted to freshmen and sophomores, so be sure to take it early!

Juniors and Seniors: We have a new course being taught in Fall that will count as an Animal Science Departmental Elective. The course is ANS 495Y, section 002 and is called Managing Growing and Performance Horses. It is a 3-credit course, and the pre-requisite is ANS 110 (Intro to Equine Science). The course is being taught by one of our Animal Science faculty members, Dr. Paul Siciliano. There is a lab with the course, so be sure to sign up for both lecture and lab.

BEEF INTEREST

If you are interested in beef cattle, please apply for the beef internship! It is during the academic year, so it will not interfere with your summer plans. For the 2007/2008 academic year, one beef internship is available and the deadline for applying is April 5. The application and information can be found at http://www.cals.ncsu.edu/an_sci/home/teaching.htm. The Beef Intern works closely with the North Carolina Cattlemen's Association throughout the academic year and earns $1,000.

CALS OUTSTANDING TEACHER AWARD NOMINATIONS

Every year North Carolina State University recognizes outstanding teachers in each college. The process begins with a call for nominations from students. Nominations for 2008 awards are now being accepted by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (deadline January 1, 2008). For complete details, access the following web site: http://harvest.cals.ncsu.edu/index.cfm?showpage=33.

GRADUATION INFORMATION

Congratulations to all of our graduating seniors! Letters with information concerning graduation ceremonies have been mailed to IAS and SAS graduates. If you are graduating and do not receive a letter, please see Dee Pryse in 117 Polk Hall. Also, please RSVP to Dee no later than April 9 to let her know if you will or will not be attending the departmental ceremony (515-3028). Graduating Agricultural Institute students will receive letters from Dr. Kirby's office (107 Patterson Hall).

The departmental graduation ceremony for SAS and IAS students will be at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, at the McKimmon Center. Graduates are encouraged to invite their families and friends to the ceremonies. However, the number of guests will initially be limited to 6 for each graduate, as our space for the ceremony is limited. Dee will have a waiting list available for graduates wishing to bring more than 6 guests, and you will be contacted as space becomes available. The deadline to let Dee know about guests is April 9. (Note: There is no limit for the number of guests attending the big University Commencement ceremony, which is at the RBC Center.)

The graduation ceremonies for Agricultural Institute students will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, May 11, at Stewart Theater.

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH SYMPOSIUM

The University Undergraduate Research Symposium will be held on Tuesday, April 17 at the McKimmon Center. Abstracts are due Monday, April 9. Please refer to the Undergraduate Research web site http://www.ncsu.edu/ugrs/ for more information. All undergraduate students who completed research projects since Spring 2006 and have not presented the research are encouraged to participate, and everyone is invited to attend.

EXTERNAL LEARNING EXPERIENCES

If you will be doing a summer internship that relates to Animal Science, please stop by 117 Polk Hall to pick up an "External Learning Experience" form, or print it from the web site listed at the top of this newsletter. In order to receive credit for the experience, the form should be returned prior to your first day of work; instructions are included with the sheet. Agricultural Institute students who will be completing summer internships should pick up the corresponding form (AGI 092) from Dr. Kirby's office in 107 Patterson Hall.

TEACHING ASSISTANTS

If you are interested in being an undergraduate teaching assistant for a course you earned an "A" in, please talk to the instructor who will be teaching the course the semester you would like to TA. Students can earn up to 3 credit hours per teaching experience. (Note: Students who earned less than an "A" may serve as an undergraduate TA with permission from the instructor.)

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH OR EXTENSION
Students who conduct undergraduate research or who work with Extension Specialists in Animal Science may earn up to 3 credit hours of ANS 493, On Campus Learning Experience. The form is available outside 117 Polk Hall or on the web at http://www.cals.ncsu.edu/an_sci/home/teaching/492_493.moa.pdf

ANIMAL SCIENCE DISTANCE ED COURSES

There are four Animal Science courses being taught via the web this summer. One is for students earning the Animal Science Minor, and the other three courses are for Majors or Minors. ANS/NTR/PO 415 (Comparative Nutrition) counts as a Discipline Course for Animal Science majors, and it is being offered as a 10-week course. ANS/PO 425 (Feed Mill Management) is being offered as a 10-week course; it counts as a Departmental Elective for Animal Science majors. Both ANS/NTR/PO 415 and ANS/PO 425 count toward the Animal Science Minor and the Nutrition Minor. ANS 110, (Intro to Equine Science) is being offered as a 10-week course and counts as a departmental elective for Animal Science majors. For non-Animal Science majors, ANS 225 (Principles of Animal Nutrition) can count in place of ANS 230 for the Animal Science Minor (but it is 3 credits, and you will still need 15 total credits for the Animal Science Minor). It is being offered as a 10-week summer course. Note: ANS 225 does not count toward the Animal Science major; for SAS and IAS students, it would be a Free Elective. Distance Ed Fee: All of these offerings are through DELTA, which means there is a Distance Ed fee; see online Pack Tracks for the link to more information. For summer courses, the DELTA fee is similar to regular tuition. For more information see: http://distance.ncsu.edu/aboutde/index.html.

SCHOLARSHIPS

American Jersey Cattle Association: July 5, 2007 is the postmark deadline to submit applications for scholarships administered by the American Jersey Cattle Association. Awards exceeding $10,000 will be made for the 2007-08 academic year. A Russell Malnati Scholarship for Advanced Studies of $5,000 will be awarded. Undergraduate students who have completed at least one-half of course work credit hours required for a degree in dairy science, animal science (dairy emphasis), large animal veterinary practice, dairy production or manufacturing, or dairy product marketing are eligible to apply. For more information, contact Dr. Cherie L. Bayer at (614)861-3636, ext. 334.

KEMI
There are two opportunities each year to do internships in the horse industry through the Kentucky Equine Management Internship (KEMI). The fall internship is for students who would like to work with the training of young horses, and the spring internship is for students who are interested in foaling and breeding mares. The KEMI internship allows students to live in central Kentucky and work on a Thoroughbred farm, and students also learn valuable information through the lecture portion of KEMI. These internships are intense, live-in experiences that are for dedicated horse enthusiasts. Students are paid for serving as KEMI interns, but there is also a fee for participating; it usually works out to be that expenses and income are roughly equal. April 30th is the deadline for students who are interested in the Fall 2007 KEMI internship. For more information, please see the KEMI web site at: http://www.kemi.org/.
