UNDERGRADUATE COORDINATOR'S OFFICE

It is time again to make an appointment with your advisor for fall and summer advising. Seniors and second-year Agricultural Institute students should see their advisors the week of March 12th, Juniors and first-year Agricultural Institute students need appointments the week of March 19th, and Sophomores and Freshmen should see their advisors during the week of March 26th. Be sure to make an appointment early! Some advisors post their schedules in the hallway where you can stop by to sign up for a time that fits your schedule.

Before seeing your advisor, please go online so you can have your semester planned out. To determine which courses you should be signing up for, look at your Degree Audit online and compare it to your curriculum sheet (available outside 117 Polk or online http://www.cals.ncsu.edu/an_sci/home/teaching.htm). This way you will be able to have your questions answered (about course conflicts, choices, etc.) when you meet with your advisor. Remember, only your advisor can give you your Personal Identification Number (PIN).

If you are graduating in December 2007, please pick up your blue "Application for Degree" card and Graduation Worksheet from Dee in 117 Polk before you meet with your advisor. The blue "Application for Degree" card must be filled out and returned to Dee in 117 Polk prior to the first day of classes in fall.

Cross-listed Courses. Some of our fall courses are cross-listed with other departments, and the course will count toward graduation regardless of which way you sign up for it. For example, ANS 415, Comparative Nutrition, is cross-listed as PO 415 and NTR 415, and it will count as an Animal Science Discipline course regardless of which way the student enrolls in it. Another cross-listed fall course is ANS/FS 322, Muscle Foods and Eggs.

NEW ANIMAL SCIENCE COURSE

This fall Dr. Paul Siciliano will be teaching a course called "Managing Growing and Performance Horses." This 3-credit course includes a lab and will count as an Animal Science departmental elective or as a CALS Group A,B,C elective. The lecture is listed in Pack Tracks as ANS 495Y, and the lab is ANS 495Z (must sign up for both). This course is an overview of scientific applications used in managing growing and performance horses. Topics include nutrition and feeding, disease prevention, exercise conditioning, and methods of evaluation and selection. This course is open to Juniors and Seniors of all majors who have completed ANS 110.

GRADUATION INFORMATION

Graduation announcements may be obtained any time online at the Bookstore's web site (http://www.ncsu.edu/bookstore). Samples are on display in the Catalyst Bookshop. For information about caps and gowns, see the following web site: http://www.ncsu.edu/registrar/graduation/announce.html

Departmental graduation ceremonies will be held Saturday, May 12 for SAS and IAS students (1:30 p.m. at the McKimmon Center), and Friday, May 11 (3:00 p.m. at Stewart Theatre) for Agricultural Institute students. All graduates are encouraged to invite their families and friends to the ceremonies. However, because of limited seating at the McKimmon Center for the Departmental ceremony, you will need to see Dee in 117 Polk to get on a waiting list if you plan to bring more than 6 guests to the Departmental ceremony. As we hear from graduates who are bringing fewer than 6 guests, we will move people off the waiting list on a first-come, first-served basis. Information will be mailed to graduating seniors in late March. If you do not receive your information in the mail, please see Dee in 117 Polk.

Information about the University ceremony at the RBC Center can be found on the web at http://www.ncsu.edu/registrar/graduation/. There is no limit to the number of people you invite to this ceremony.

EXTERNAL LEARNING EXPERIENCE

If you will be doing a summer internship that relates to Animal Science, please stop by 117 Polk Hall to pick up an "External Learning Experience" (ANS 492) form. In order to receive credit for the experience, the form needs to be returned prior to the first day of work; instructions are included with the sheet, and it is also available online at http://www.cals.ncsu.edu/an_sci/home/teaching/492_493.moa.pdf Agricultural Institute students who will be completing summer internships should pick up the corresponding form (AGI 092) from the Ag Institute office in 107 Patterson Hall.

CALS SCHOLARSHIPS
Applications for scholarships from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences should be submitted by April 1st, but will be accepted after that date. The application form is available online at http://harvest.cals.ncsu.edu/index.cfm?showpage=26.

STUDY ABROAD
For Study Abroad options available to you as an NC State student, please check out the web site at http://www.ncsu.edu/studyabroad or call the office at 515-2087.

NATIONAL STUDENT EXCHANGE

Did you know there is the opportunity to pay NC State tuition while attending another university for a semester or two? We have recently had Animal Science students go to Virginia Tech to learn about dairy cattle, to Montana to learn about range science, and to Hawaii to learn about marine biology. For more information and a list of participating universities, please visit the web site http://www7.acs.ncsu.edu/nse/.

SUMMER DISTANCE ED COURSES
There are four Animal Science courses being taught via the web this summer. One is for students earning the Animal Science Minor, and the other three courses are for Majors or Minors. ANS/NTR/PO 415 (Comparative Nutrition) counts as a Discipline Course for Animal Science majors, and it is being offered as a 10-week course. ANS/PO 425 (Feed Mill Management) is being offered as a 10-week course; it counts as a Departmental Elective for Animal Science majors. Both ANS/NTR/PO 415 and ANS/PO 425 count toward the Animal Science Minor and the Nutrition Minor. ANS 110, (Intro to Equine Science) is being offered as a 10-week course and counts as a departmental elective for Animal Science majors. For non-Animal Science majors, ANS 225 (Principles of Animal Nutrition) can count in place of ANS 230 for the Animal Science Minor (but it is 3 credits, and you will still need 15 total credits for the Animal Science Minor). It is being offered as a 10-week summer course. Note: ANS 225 does not count toward the Animal Science major; for SAS and IAS students, it would be a Free Elective. Distance Ed Fee: All of these offerings are through DELTA, which means there is a Distance Ed fee; see online Pack Tracks for the link to more information. For summer courses, the DELTA fee is similar to regular tuition.
