Volume 18, No. 3; November/December 2002
Dr. Jeannette A. Moore, Undergraduate Coordinator, 102 Polk Hall (515-3028)
Dr. Dr. Roger L. McCraw, Interim Department Head, 123 Polk Hall (515-2755)
If you are a freshman
looking for an Animal Science course to take next semester, consider ANS 105
(Introduction to Companion Animals). There are no pre-requisites for this course,
but you need to be a Freshman or Sophomore to enroll.
If you are graduating this
semester, you will receive information in the mail just before Thanksgiving
time. For baccalaureate students, the University ceremony begins at 8:30 a.m.
on Wednesday, December 18 at the RBC Center (Entertainment Sports Arena), and
the Departmental ceremony will be in the McKimmon Center at 12:00 noon. There
is no limit to the number of people you can bring to the University ceremony
because it will be at the RBC Center, but we do need to limit the number of
guests who will attend the Departmental ceremony. Every graduate may bring 8
guests. If you wish to bring more than 8 guests, please let Dee know.
For Agricultural Institute students,
the graduation ceremony is at 3:00 p.m. at the McKimmon Center on the same day
(Wednesday, December 18).
Graduation announcements
may be obtained any time at the NCSU Bookstore on Dunn Avenue. Personalized
announcements must be pre-ordered; it takes three to four weeks for them to
arrive.
Cap and gown distribution
will take place beginning Friday, December 6 at the NCSU Bookstore (Dunn Avenue)
on the lower level. Please follow directional signs in the store. Undergraduate
students graduating with honors will have the option of purchasing an honors
sash for an additional fee. All graduation apparel must be paid for at the time
of pick-up. The bookstore will be open for distribution as follows:
December 6-17 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Saturdays 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
If you are an SAS or IAS student
graduating next semester, please be sure to turn in your blue "Application
for Degree" card and Graduation Worksheet to Dee Pryse in 102 Polk as soon as
they are completed. We need to check through all of the cards and turn them
in to Patterson Hall by the first day of Spring semester (January 9, 2003),
so we would appreciate you getting those to us soon. You will also need to complete
theGraduating Senior Survey. It is now available only on the web and the web
address is on the "Graduation Procedure" memo from Dr. Moore. See Dee Pryse
in 102 Polk if you did not get a copy of the letter from your advisor.
If you are a rising senior,
please fill out a timetable of classes for your remaining two or three semesters.
You can use this semester's and next semester's TRACS books to see what time
the courses are offered, but be sure you are aware that some of our Discipline
courses are only offered every other year (look at your blue or green curriculum
sheet to see when they are offered). Planning your remaining semesters can prevent
unhappy surprises, such as discovering that ANS 230 (Nutrition) and BCH 451
(Biochemistry) are both always taught MWF 9:10 to 10:00, and there is only one
section of each.
If you need to pick up a copy of your curriculum sheet, the list of Humanities and Social Science courses, the list of ABC Electives, an On-Campus Learning Experience form (ANS 493), or any other academic form, please stop by 102 Polk Hall. We are open from 7:30 a.m. to noon and 1:00 to 4:30 p.m. (actually 5:00 unless Dr. Moore is teaching or in a meeting).
Academic Quadrathlon:
The Animal Science Club will have its annual Academic Quadrathlon on December
6 (Friday afternoon) and 7 (Saturday 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.). For December
6, teams of 4 can compete in the hands-on portion of the Quadrathlon at the
Animal Educational Units. On Saturday, the teams will make oral presentations,
take a written test, and compete in the Quiz Bowl, which ends up being fun and
entertaining for all who participate. The winning team will compete in the Regional
Academic Quadrathlon January 31 through February 3 in Mobile, Alabama.
The next meeting will be held on
November 5 at 7:00 p.m. in Polk 5A.

As the semester comes
to a close, the Companion Animal Club has a lot of great activities to take
your mind off exams. We have a fund raiser scheduled for Monday, November
4 from 3:00-8:00 p.m. on campus. Come support the club by filling out a credit
card application. If you help the club get people to fill out applications,
you are entitled to join us for a night of ice-skating (free for dues-paying
members) on December 6. We also have a trip to Baltimore, MD and Washington,
DC to visit the National Zoo and Baltimore Aquarium. If you are interested
in going, please come to our November 6 meeting or email the club at companion_animal@hotmail.com.
During the month of November the club will be collecting donations for our
Animal-Need drive. Food, toys, bedding, and cleaning supplies for cats and
dogs will be collected and donated to the SPCA to support the care and placement
of homeless animals. Please look for drop boxes around Polk Hall. We have
meetings on November 6 and 20, as well as December 4 at 7:00 p.m. in Polk
5A. Anyone interested in animals commonly kept as pets is invited to come
see what we are about!

to have a speaker on holistic medicine, and on November 18 we are planning
to have a zoo vet come to speak. We will also be choosing a pet of the month
for November. A deadline for the Safe Haven for Cats has been set for November
19. We also have plans to play paintball one weekend in November. Our Christmas
party will be held on either the 4th or 5th of December. More details on the
date and time will be available soon.
