Graduate
Training in Behavioral Biology
North
Carolina State University presents excellent educational
opportunities for graduate students under the umbrella of
the W.M. Keck Center
for Behavioral Biology by providing for them unique multidisciplinary
research opportunities. Students in the Center receive
their doctoral degree and must fulfill the degree requirements
of their home departments. In addition, they must comply
with
the educational requirements of the concentration in Behavioral
Biology. In addition to courses that provide them with
a comprehensive
appreciation of behavioral biology, students will take
courses in statistics and professional ethics, and will receive
training
in scientific presentation skills. Since many breakthrough
discoveries arise from synergistic interactions at the
interfaces of scientific disciplines, students will be encouraged
to
select two faculty mentors, rather than one, who can supervise
a collaborative
multidisciplinary research project; students are encouraged
to devise an interdisciplinary project of their own conception,
but which draws on the expertise of both faculty members.
Students will also be required to: 1. Participate in undergraduate
teaching
at least one semester; 2. Attend the monthly Keck Distinguished
Seminars, which feature prominent scientists; 3. Participate
in monthly group discussions on topics of general interest;
4. Participate in an annual student symposium; 5. Attend
an annual professional development workshop; 6. Contribute
to
the monthly
newsletter of the W.M. Keck Center.
Multidisciplinary
Postdoctoral Training Opportunities
The
W.M. Keck Center
benefits greatly from the involvement of postdoctoral fellows
for the initiation of new collaborative
research endeavors
and, vice versa, postdoctoral trainees have an opportunity
to establish themselves as independent young investigators
in an
especially stimulating and nurturing environment. At NC State
University’s Keck Center, postdoctoral fellows are fully
involved in all Keck Center activities. The Keck Center takes
great pride in its tradition of mentorship for postdoctoral trainees.
Undergraduate
Training Opportunities
The
W.M. Keck Center provides
research opportunities for undergraduate students and undergraduates
are encouraged to participate in
all Keck Center activities
