The Herbarium currently has several
opportunities for students to gain valuable work or research experience.
In addition, as we move forward in our modernization efforts, on-going
volunteer opportunities will continue to exist for students and others
interested in assisting with the collection.

Graduate student support for floristic researchNEW
Funding up
to $1000 per year is available to graduate students pursuing
floristic research in the department. This support is
available to cover the costs of materials and some travel
associated with the student's research. The support is
additional to any research assistantships or teaching
assistantships awarded to students on admission. For further
information regarding opportunities in floristic research in our

Work-study opportunities
*
Herbarium Intern
(1 position): Assist in maintaining and cataloguing the herbarium
collection. Duties include variously sorting, filing, and mounting
herbarium specimens, barcoding and databasing the collection, as well as
imaging specimens using digital photographic equipment. Students
must receive federal work-study support as part of their financial aid
package to be eligible. Previous experience with MS Access and
Adobe Photoshop preferred, but not required. Will train.
Salary: $8/hr

Independent learning
opportunities
The Herbarium welcomes
application of interested students to various independent learning
opportunities. By registering for the following independent study
hours, students can gain valuable hands-on experience, while at the same
time receiving credit towards their degree. Honors level
independent study opportunities are also available. In addition to
the listed opportunities, project proposals by motivated students are
always welcome.
* Plant Collection
Curation Techniques (BO 493: 3 Credit Hours)
Description: By
working in the herbarium, students will learn about basic curation of a
plant collection at the specimen level -- including choice of archival
materials, label preparation, and specimen mounting techniques.
Students will build on the hands-on experience provided in the
herbarium, by researching a particular aspect of herbarium activity
(e.g., plant mounting techniques, history, plant identification, etc.)
and developing an end of semester report or web-page.

Applied Taxonomy Practicum (BO 493: 3 Credit Hours)
Description:
Guided by the course mentor, students will choose a group of plants and
then develop a helpful, web-based, identification resource (including
keys, distribution maps, etc.) to that group. Herbarium resources,
such as microscopes, taxonomic references, and digital camera equipment
will be available to support the student's study. Web-skills will
be taught as part of the practicum. See
