The Herbarium currently has several opportunities for students to gain valuable work or research experience.  In addition, as we move forward in our modernization efforts, on-going volunteer opportunities will continue to exist for students and others interested in assisting with the collection.

Please contact Dr. Alexander Krings (515.2700) for more information.

Graduate student support for floristic researchNEW

Funding up to $1000 per year is available to graduate students pursuing floristic research in the department.  This support is available to cover the costs of materials and some travel associated with the student's research.  The support is additional to any research assistantships or teaching assistantships awarded to students on admission.  For further information regarding opportunities in floristic research in our department, please contact either Dr. Jon Stucky or Dr. Alexander Krings.

Work-study opportunities

* Herbarium Intern (1 position): Assist in maintaining and cataloguing the herbarium collection.  Duties include variously sorting, filing, and mounting herbarium specimens, barcoding and databasing the collection, as well as imaging specimens using digital photographic equipment.  Students must receive federal work-study support as part of their financial aid package to be eligible.  Previous experience with MS Access and Adobe Photoshop preferred, but not required.  Will train.

Salary: $8/hr

Hourly commitment per week: Variable, based on award

Appointment: Fall, Spring, Summer, or Academic Year

Independent learning opportunities

The Herbarium welcomes application of interested students to various independent learning opportunities.  By registering for the following independent study hours, students can gain valuable hands-on experience, while at the same time receiving credit towards their degree.  Honors level independent study opportunities are also available.  In addition to the listed opportunities, project proposals by motivated students are always welcome.

* Plant Collection Curation Techniques (BO 493: 3 Credit Hours)

Description: By working in the herbarium, students will learn about basic curation of a plant collection at the specimen level -- including choice of archival materials, label preparation, and specimen mounting techniques.  Students will build on the hands-on experience provided in the herbarium, by researching a particular aspect of herbarium activity (e.g., plant mounting techniques, history, plant identification, etc.) and developing an end of semester report or web-page.

Hourly commitment per week: 5-7

* Applied Taxonomy Practicum (BO 493: 3 Credit Hours)

Description: Guided by the course mentor, students will choose a group of plants and then develop a helpful, web-based, identification resource (including keys, distribution maps, etc.) to that group.  Herbarium resources, such as microscopes, taxonomic references, and digital camera equipment will be available to support the student's study.  Web-skills will be taught as part of the practicum.  See an example of a previous project here.

Hourly commitment per week: 6-7
