Our Mission

The Biological Resources Facility (BRF) was established in 1997 to serve the research faculty of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at NC State University. The BRF houses a multitude of research animals including mice, rats, voles, rabbits, frogs, fish and other aquatics, quail and reptiles.

The BRF is located on the North Campus of NC State in Raleigh, North Carolina. It is situated adjacent to Gardner Hall and contains approximately 20,000 square feet. It is a modern, climate controlled, restricted access facility including office and administrative support space, a clinical laboratory, necropsy and preparation rooms and a surgical suite. Environmental chambers allow investigators even more flexibility in control of temperature, humidity and lighting conditions for their research animals.

About one-fifth of the space in the BRF is devoted to an Insectary, in which many types of insects are reared to aid investigators in the Department of Entomology. Other departments with research interests here include Animal Science; Environmental and Molecular Toxicology; Food Science; Genetics; Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences; Molecular and Structural Biochemistry; Microbiology; Population Health and Pathobiology; and Zoology. The BRF accommodates the research and teaching needs of about 20 faculty members at NC State, and works cooperatively with researchers from private industry and other governmental agencies.

The BRF allows the research endeavors of the CALS faculty to be centralized. Centralization permits increased opportunities for collaboration among faculty members of different departments. It also prevents redundancy of research efforts and equipment, hence allowing devotion of resources to research. The BRF fulfills a valuable need in CALS, providing a site for the humane care of research animals.

The facility was designed to house laboratory animals under conditions required by local and federal regulatory agencies. The BRF is regulated locally by the NC State University Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). The BRF is equipped with a backup electrical supply and air-conditioning system to insure the welfare of the animals.

The BRF also operates a satellite facility on Centennial Campus. Both facilities are served by a laboratory animal veterinarian and an Advisory Board, with day-to-day operations run by a laboratory animal facility manager.

Our Promise

Perhaps at no time in human history has biological research progressed so rapidly or held so much promise. With the understanding we now have of the molecular underpinnings of life, we can ask--and answer--important new questions.

Yet, as much as we know about life processes, there is so much more we do not know. Biological research does, indeed, hold great promise. Scientific observation of animals is likely to lead to treatments for an array of human and animal ailments as well as strategies to improve the production and quality of food and fiber and many other advances. But that promise never will be realized unless we continue to question, to experiment.
