At 78 mm in length, the St. Helena giant earwig (Labidura herculeana) is the world's largest species of Dermaptera.  It has been found only on the northeastern plains of St. Helena Island where it lives largely underground.  It has been more than 20 years since living specimens have been collected and the species is now feared to be extinct.  This commemorative stamp was issued on January 4, 1982. earwig stamp
