Common name: Fly larvae
Class: Insecta
Order: Diptera
Ecological niche: Herbivores, scavengers
Distinguishing characteristics: All dipteran larvae
are legless. In more primitive families, fly larvae have
well-developed head capsules with mandibulate
mouthparts. These are reduced or absent in more
advanced suborders where the larvae, known as
maggots, have worm-like bodies and only a simple
pair of mouth hooks for feeding.
