Agostino Bassi (1773-1856) is considered the founder of the parasitic theory of infection.   He is commemorated by Italy because he discovered that a fungus caused "muscardine" disease of silkworms.   This stamp was issued on September 5, 1953 to coincide with the 6th International Congress of Microbiology held in Rome.
