The giant African swallowtail, Papilio antimachus (family Papilionidae), is regarded as the world's largest butterfly.   It lives in tropical forests of central Africa where it usually flies at treetop level and rarely comes to the ground.   This stamp was issued April 9, 1979 by the republic of Sierra Leone, a country near the west coast of Africa.
