The cotton boll weevil, Anthonomis grandis (Coleoptera:   Curculionidae), is regarded as the most serious pest of cotton in the New World.   The species was first discovered in Central America around 1850, but today its populations are distributed throughout all cotton-producing regions of North and South America.   The adult stage is illustrated on this stamp issued by Venezuela on August 30, 1968.
