Common Foliage Diseases of Hardwoods in North
Carolina
In general most of these diseases seldom
cause serious damage to trees and rarely cause mortality. Defoliation may result from a number of foliage diseases especially in unusually favorable weather conditions. Repeated defoliations in successive years can stress trees sufficiently to allow other, often secondary pathogens, to infect the weakened plant and lead to growth inhibition or mortality.
