COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This class introduces students to agriculture in the tropics and tropical diseases on important tropical crops including cacao, banana, potato and coffee will be given. Trade issues relevant to US and Central American farmers are also discussed. Students learn conversational travel Spanish. Dave Thurston’s book on Tropical Plant Pathology is an optional reference and additional papers will be provided by individual instructors. We will take a 1 week trip to Costa Rica in the summer for a field class in Tropical Plant Pathology. We will tour coffee, banana, pineapple, tropical fruit, cacao and vegetable farms in the country and learn about the disease, social and political issues facing farmers in the developing world.
